I absolutely love this whole area. Far from roads and city noise. Actually had a pack of wild horses on two of my mornings. Many interesting trails nearby. The Hull Cabin is a must see. Also, the Grandview Lookout tower with housing for operator in the day. I actually climbed the tower with great views of the canyon in the distance. Water is the biggest challenge. Need to drive 12+ miles to Mather Campground camper service to fill up your water bottles or rigs. I wish there was a lake nearby for fishing or swimming. But I guess you can’t have everything. I will come again.

When you first turn of the highway there is a sign saying no camping, no fires: $500 fine. At that point you’re still on NP land, drive less than a mile and you enter Coconino NF land and there’s lots of dispersed spots to camp at

These horses are VERY tolerant to people and dogs and they hung around our camp constantly which was super cool but also inconvenient. There was also quite a bit of traffic through the area and some trash scattered. I would definitely stay here again in a pinch, but it’s not the best camp for long term stay.

Unpaved access road but well maintained. Literally a hundred yards off the rim road. You can pay for showers and get a free dump and launderette at the park campsite near the entrance.
Thank you National Forest Folk!

Entering from the National Park (North side of dispersed camping) there’s a sign about 1/2 mile down Coconino Rim Rd / Rd 310 letting you know you are entering Kaibab National Forest and are free to camp (and the road gets better from here). The short road from highway 64 is a little rough, but if you drive slow and carefully you should be alright! We were in a 26ft RV and didn’t have a problem finding a spot! Our site even had a rock fire ring!
There is a cell tower in the middle of this area, so service shouldn’t be an issue (full bars on AT&T and Verizon for us).

Drove by today and they have upgraded the road, renamed it The Arizona Trail and there are signs that clearly state no camping or fires.
“Road In Impassable ”
noted 4/17/2023
On April 17, the road in was impassable due to mucky conditions from a wet and snowy winter. A truck was stuck waiting for a tow. We did not attempt pulling a 34’ 5th wheel.

Large wall off snow blocking entrance.
“2 Feet Of Snow (Feb ‘23)”
noted 2/4/2023
Access road off of Hwy 64 was impassable due to ~2ft of snow that doesn’t look like it’s melting anytime soon. Just a heads up for anyone passing through in the next few weeks.
Rated 4 stars to not throw off the average, but needless to say didn’t stay here

Elevation is 7,500', not the advertised 6,000'. I'm glad I caught that before heading up for an end of April visit! That kind of elevation error makes a substantial difference in the likelihood of freezing weather at night.
