We were visiting the Great Sand Dunes and wanted to find a spot close by for the night. Thanks to this site, we found this spot and the views are amazing!! It was super windy for us so we didn’t spend much time outside but we got there around 6-7pm anyways. Road is a little bumpy but doable!

Fantastic spot
Plenty of space
Washboard road, no 4WD required
Our camp was visited by a pair of coyotes just after sunset. They didn’t do anything except pee on our tents, but they were clearly not afraid of humans. People have obviously fed them. Keep food far away from campsite.

Nice free spot in the middle of nowhere. Very quiet and a great view. We stayed for 1 night in April and saw two other campers. There’s plenty of room but the ground is very bumpy. Not impossible, we’re in a van and it just took some shifting around for us to get comfortably level. The campground is very easy to find and I’d guess that any vehicle could make the drive, but should be cautious if it’s wet. The day we were there, the temperature was perfect but we were forced to close our door because the wind was kicking so much sand into our van. There are no facilities, no trash can, and our Tmobile service was very spotty, basically unusable. So overall, for the peaceful location I would totally stay here again, but I probably wouldn’t do it on an especially windy or rainy day.

Just beautiful! Camped in a 43 foot fifth wheel with no problems. We parked at the first section. There is another one down the road that would be good for big rigs as well.

We stayed in May 2018 and had 4 bars Verizon LTE. The area is mostly quiet except for some traffic going up/down the mountain, sometimes at odd hours. The National Park has a free dump/fill station (after you pay to get into the park).
Bare essentials can be found at the general store near the NP or in nearby Blanca. Walmart and additional services are 30 min away in Alamosa.

We didn't know what to expect, but we followed the directions, and we were not disappointed.
A washboard road in was a little daunting, and not a tree in sight. But, you can see for MILES. Pleasently surprised, and spent another night here. Plenty of room, although the sites aren't flat, easily leveled our trailer.

We stayed here two nights, rather than in the park campground, and I would definitely stay here again! It's wide open, so it can be windy; just make sure if you're using a tent that the rain fly is tied down/secured somehow.
There's a lot of open space and pullouts, so finding a spot to stay wasn't an issue at all. Incredible views of the night sky and the Milky Way since you're not anywhere near a city, and it's relatively close to Great Sand Dunes - maybe a 20 min drive. There was also surprisingly good cell reception, at least for Verizon!!

There were 3 other cars/vans that joined us in that spot but everyone was very respectful and super quiet. We loved the cows that walked around in the fields and across the road. The site was clean and Verizon connectivity was good with 4G. It can get very windy and chilly at night but we loved the beautiful prairie views and sunset and especially the night sky! We saw the Milky Way with the bare eye!

I opted to pay for an annual SWA (State Wildlife Area) pass that gets you free entry into San Luis SWA a bit further down the road. There are bathrooms and FREE electric hook up. You can stay for two weeks at a time.
