Question about Sacred White Shell Mountain Dispersed Camping

Ken asked on 1/14/2021

We are new to the RV world and even newer to boondocking, this will be our first time at a BLM land. We hope to camp here this summer, 1st week of August arriving on a Thursday. Is it possible that all sites will be gone? Does it get filled up during summer season? What happens then?

Yes, it's possible that all sites will be taken. Always a gamble when you can't reserve a spot. Based on the number of reviews for this site and the number of reviewers that mention how crowded it was when they visited during the summer, I would say it does fill up. The smaller your rig, the more sites will be available to you, and vise versa. We camped 2 years ago in a 35' fifth wheel and had no problems but it does seem like it's gotten a bit busier since then. Always have backup plans because if it's full, you have to move on to somewhere else. The National Park has a paid campground, and there are other free places nearby (Zapata Falls, Smith Reservoir, and San Luis Wildlife Area). Good luck!

I highly doubt it ever gets filled up unless there is some kind of event which is also doubtful. There are no designated sites. Wide open land.

There are a fair number of spots along the road. Some are large enough for several rigs. So while no one can guarantee you will find space if you are willing to share a larger spot it seems likely you’ll find space (assuming the people already in the larger spot don’t mind sharing it!). Arriving Thursday is much better than Friday or Saturday in terms of availability. Even earlier in the week is helpful. If there are no spots then you have to move on.

We were there on July. It wasn’t crowded and there was a plenty of space there. There were no seperate spots for each rv so you pick the space where is available. The further you drive your vehicle, the more gravelly road you go.

It’s just an open area road with like pockets of places to park in. The further back you drive, the softer and more rocky the road gets. It was moderately full when we went and just stayed near the front.

I know the weekends it gets pretty busy! There is another boondocking spot down the highway so I think you will be ok. Depends on your rig size too. But don’t stress or overthink it!
