We were in between reservations and decided to stay here since it was free and highlighted on this app. It was a major holiday weekend--big mistake for us. PROS: beautiful and away from the city. CONS: It is understood that there is more campers over holidays. It seemed like the local Dollar General with people coming in and out, ALL night long. It was a very sandy place. I actually opened my camper door and a whirlwind of sand came in with me. Windows needed to be opened; therefore, more dust coming into camper. I had a pleasant experience around the other camper beside me until evening when we got another neighbor. Three young people in a tent actually set up their tent at the foot of our stairs. This has never happened before. For experienced campers, I advise not to stay here. Most folks doing this kind of camping do not know social camping etiquette.

If you can tolerate wind you'll be fine. Mostly stayed in the rig because it was just too windy, that's what created the sand dunes after all. Lower spots are good for all types of rvs and you can't beat the price.

About 15 miles to Dunes National Park. Plenty of space to be separated by others. Beautiful views. Water and dump at the National Park., or pay Oasis RV park $15. Very windy at times. Most important, we enjoyed our stay.

We planned to try Zapata Falls but then found this location, which is about 3 miles past HWY 160 on NHY 150 leading to Sand Dunes National Park. The entrance is just past mile marker 3 and you can see 4 big information boards. We parked right behind the signs because there was plenty of room and the road leading up the mountain to the other sites was dirt and looked to get steep. We did not see any reason to drive the RV up the dirt road when we could stay at the entrance. We did see multiple cars and smaller RVs/campers going up the road and there seemed to be plenty of room for everyone as it appears you can park anywhere along the road in the desert. Note, we travel by motorcycle once parked and did go up to Zapata Falls to hike. We were very glad we did not attempt to drive the RV up that 3.5 miles dirt road (there were no big holes in the road just lots of smaller rocks, curves, and construction places).
The scenery here is nice and we have good cell service. Note however, that strong winds is what creates the sand dunes and the wind here is unbelievable. It seems to get the worst about mid afternoon. 2 of the 3 days, the brown sand clouds obstructed views of the mountains - they were actually interesting to watch as we had never seen such a thing (posted a pic of our RV with the sand cloud moving through). The RV literally shook in the wind! Overall, location is great for the park and we would definitely stay again (at the entrance).

Great views the further down the road you go. Fairly smooth road until it starts to incline, recommend awd if you want to climb.
Plenty of clearings off the main road. Can be really windy, but no complaints other than that.

For clarification, BLM road 5410 is approximately 3.5 miles on highway 150 from the intersection with highway 160. There are some directional signs in a pullout but not easily visible from the highway so watch for the turn to your right. No signs on the highway.

We arrived after dark parked in at the second spot on the right. Woke up in the morning to a great view of the mountain. Only 2 other campers where around but all very far apart.
Road wasn’t bad at all, very easy in all style rig.
Very close to the national park which was also a great stop.

Lots of garbage in our site. LEAVE NO TRACE, people. Seriously. It isn’t hard.
Some road noise but far off. Good enough cell coverage that our kids could stream into their classrooms (family trip during covid so we’re both eworking and they’re elearning) and we could get enough data for work as well.

Definitely the place to stay near the park, particularly in early winter now as the NP campground is closed for the season.

We were the first ones there and had an amazing view of the mountain. There was a few people who showed up throughout the day and some people driving up the mountain late at night. It wasn’t a bad experience just REALLY dusty and REALLY windy.
The turn off in almost gave me a heart attack, the back tires of the rig dipped off a small road over a drainage ditch even though we swung as wide as possible.
You can’t beat the proximity to the Sand Dunes and as a one nighter I would do it again.
