Road is very lightly washboard, but huge 5th wheels looked to have no issue getting up it. We’ve been on bumpier highways than this!
Lovely views of the mountains and there were lots of stars at night.
T-mobile connection was strong enough to stream videos, but probably not to work full time if you needed to VC.
Only complaint would be that you can hear your neighbors and all the big rigs had their generators running.

This spot is just 20 minutes from the Great Sand Dunes, Zapata Falls, and downtown Alamosa. Gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. Pretty quiet during the week. The only negative is that I work fulltime so need decent internet, which this spot doesn't have. So I "commuted" into Alamosa everyday. Worth it for the spot, though.

Traffic early in the morning and at night, but quiet for the most part. I had rig come park right next to me (super close) the day after I arrived and multiple spots had opened up at this point (not sure what that was about) so I just relocated to another spot. Didn’t have any other issues. Most sites have at least one fire ring. I had great service in the morning and at night, but during the day service was pretty congested. Had to hook up my antenna to be able to work remotely. You definitely need levelers as this is a road up to a mountain so it’s not level. Overall great experience

This area is very easy to access. There are 3 large turnouts suitable for large rigs. Ours is a 33 ft 5th wheel and there was plenty of room to turn around. If you continue going up the road, there may be spots suitable for smaller rigs. This location is 20 minutes from Great Sand Dunes National Park and 30 minutes from Zapata Falls, which is an amazing hike! One drawback is the amount of bugs - possibly mud wasps in the ground. We had to strategically pick a spot with fewer signs of them. Overall, this is a great free camping spot.

My party and I arrived late in the evening on a Sunday. Most all the places higher up the road along the climb to the mountain side has been filled.
We drove midway and turn left on a sandy road going into the middle of the field. There were several opening spots along the way but the ground wasn't level. Probably the 4th or 5th spot we were able to find a large enough space for all 5 of our 4x4 rig.
Once again we're threaten by possible thunderstorm and gusty wind. We setup ground tents quickly for the 3 of our parties and the other 2 parties level their ride with trackpad as they're sleeping in their truck. Got the canopy up and cooked dinner. We all settled in for the night with on again, off again rain through out the evening.
The view is awesome... at night there's plenty of distant lights from the city of Alamosa. It wasn't distracting as we're able to view the stars at night.

We camped here while visiting the Great Sand Dunes, which were Great by the way!
The road in was wash-boarded which was not fun but it was doable with our 30ft TT at very low speed. No hills or major rocks, ruts or bumps to deal with.
We came in around 3 PM and got the first spot on the right. We rode our bikes up the dirt road a ways and we noticed that there are several differently sized parking areas. Some spots have room for multiple rigs, like 5 rigs or more, and others are nothing more than a parking space off the side of the road. Our spot was perfect for us, plenty of room for our rig but not so much room that other people might come park next to us. The space/clearing across the street from us was one of the larger parking areas and by morning there were 3 additional cars parked near the TT that was set up over there. I think most people are coming to a place like this looking for seclusion. If that is what you're looking for then try to get a site that just fits your rig.
There was a fire ring on our site that did have some trash in it so that was a little disappointing, and keep your eyes open for cow patties. It was very cool having the cows walk right by within a few yards of us while we were sitting outside though.
As for the wind, We got lucky when we got there around 3 and there wasn't much wind at all. But by the time we went to the dunes and got back around 8 the wind was cranking. It settled down overnight though and we were able to cook breakfast outside after another trip to the dunes early in the morning.
This was just one of those places that you go to because it's a cool spot. Not super comfy or clean, but an experience for sure. And hey, it's free.
Verizon service was weak but it was useable...some of the time.

We drove about a half mile up to the first clearing and pulled off - a few other RVs in the area but none close enough to feel congested. The road apparently goes several miles back and up the mountain, but we didn't bother as we were content to take the first site we found. Nice and quiet at night with a small amount of traffic on the gravel road in the morning. Rather windy as others have noted, which may be typical for this area. About 20 minutes to Great Sand Dunes NP. Would definitely come back here again.

We drove further up the 4X4 road and camped up the side of the mountain a ways. Road is definitely rough and bumpy with huge rocks. Not much shade-but temps were cool. Plenty of “traffic” on the road of hikers or 4x4s going up to Blanca peak but all were quiet and respectful. We enjoyed the stay here!
