We were set to stay the night here, but as we were touring the park a storm front moved in with a lot of rain. Hearing that the wet dirt can become a sticky gumbo mess, we hooked up & moved to the town of Wall, free parking area. In dry weather though, we would definitely stay here again.

The is the most hostile place I've ever camped at. The wind is non stop and gusts over 60mph almost all the time. The wind I'm guessing comes down the plains then hits that massive berm and we're off to the races. I beat feet 2 times to the rest area down the highway about 10 minutes to save myself. The rest area itself has a man made berm about 10' or more high. I'm guessing it was to block the wind. It did the trick. I'm in a cargo trailer/camper conversion trailer that weighs 6,500 pounds and thought I was going to be flipped over. A woman with no muscles will have the door ripped from her hands and it will fly away like the storm shelter door in the Wizard of Oz. The wind is NON STOP. Just awful. I don't think there is any place to dump your trash other then the gas station that has truck parking. There is a dumpster there. I emptied my trash in the gas station trash cans every day so there were small an fit. The grocery store in town is very good. I was not allowed to go inside. They had people looking out the window for out of town plates and would come out and take your order and money due to virus. The place is spectacular but you end up staying inside the whole time. Oh, and the storms!!!! It seems that all storms with lightening strikes will take a turn so it's sure to hit all around you ALL THE TIME!!!
I had enough and drove to Rapid City. Stocked up at Walmart and then to Cabela's and camped there. Tractor Supply is next door and has propane. I stayed for maybe 4 days an chilled out and calmed down. I was on my way to Quartzsite which I loved!!!!!!

If you can manage to get a calm day this could be epic. Views are beautiful and plenty of room to spread out. Location by Badlands National Park is perfect. Also one of the cleanest spots we’ve boondocked - maybe because everything blows away?

We stayed here just one night (5/20/21) on our way back home. We stayed right across from the radio towers. I wish we would have known how bad the storms would get while we were here. The day time views were awesome. Yes, the wind was crazy, but we managed that just fine. The worst part was the two storms that made us wonder if our camper would withstand the 30-40MPH winds with 60MPH wind gusts. We had to get out of our camper and camp out in our truck twice because we weren’t sure we were going to be able to stay there with the lighting and wind the way it was. We ended up moving away from the wall, and onto another spot just adjacent from it. Overall, the site we had was pretty level, both initially and after we moved our camper. Everyone there was friendly. No one was too close to anyone else. I’d say there were about 50 different sites that were taken by the time we got there on the whole wall. It is a nice option if there isn’t too much of a storm brewing, but it is close to tornado season, so it is understandable that a crazy storm was brewing.

I wonder if the wind ever stops in the plains of South Dakota... that got a little tiring and even though my Prevost coach is built like a bank vault, I could still hear the wind all-night-long. The road in to the camping area was easily navigable with even the largest of motor coaches. The camp sites are not very level, so you either accept it, or come prepared with extreme leveling gear. You can park right on the edge of the bluff with incredible views. Excellent boondocking location.

After seeing a youtube video last summer about this location, we had to visit. We got our solar installed enough to go boondocking so we headed that way. We arrived on Sunday 5/2/21 early afternoon and stayed 3 nights. The road in is very bumpy but it's short, take it slow. There were multiple spots available. We pulled into one spot that had a little too much slope for us so we moved further down the road and found a more level spot. It was VERY windy and from the other reviews I'm assuming that may be the norm. We had 1 evening where it was safe enough to have a fire. We were visited multiple times by 3 big horn sheep. I've heard there are typically cattle in the area but we didn't see any so maybe it was too early for that. There were a few other campers who stayed multiple nights but quite a few that just pulled in for the night and were gone the next morning. We have Verizon and the service was really good. We were not working but did sit in on a zoom call and had no issues. We were in Badlands Nat'l Park a few times to visit the overviews and we did go on a hike (almost 5 miles) that included a pretty good climb at the beginning and great views. It was a fun time and we will be back.

This may be my favorite campsite yet. The views are incredible, all times of the day. There are no amenities at this site so be prepared with food, water, toilets, trash, etc. It’s windy 75% of the time. I stayed 5 nights and 2 nights were safe enough for fires. There are some “unofficial” camping sites where people have made small fire rings with rocks. This place can fit all sizes of set ups/rigs. Most people leave their setup while they visit the national park, which is only 2 miles away from the north entrance. There were some big horned sheep roaming around near my site the first half of the week. Cell service for all carriers is fantastic here. Definitely would recommend to any and everyone. Definitely will be back!

I considered the magic hour for arrivals, most folks appear to use this area as a layover and not a destination, so there was a lot of turnover of sites each day. If you arrive mid-day and hang around you'll have your choice of sites as folks leave for the next phase of their journey.
My closest neighbors were about 50 yards away....but be mindful sound does carry up there. Your music and generators will affect others.
