This area has been developed into probably a dozen designated camping sites with post-and-cable fencing blocking off other areas. It's a nice road, well-graded, with easy access, but not the more dispersed-style camping that is described in many earlier reviews. Though we didn't plan to stay in the campground proper, we were hoping to drive further down the dirt road (visible from the main road) that extends beyond the campground. That road is now fenced off an inaccessible. Only the the designated campsites are now accessible. FWIW, when we drove through in late February, all sites aside for one were already occupied, and multiple vans were crowded together at the end of the road where it's fenced off.
This isn't our style of camping — we much prefer "true" dispersed. But it's free, easy to access, level, and well-maintained if that's what you're looking for — if you can nab a space.

As previous reviews have said, the camping area is easily accessed directly off a paved highway. The road into the main camping area has been graded and recently covered in fresh gravel. The roadway is wide enough for big rigs (ours is 65 feet when hitched up) and there is a large area to turn around at the trailhead, as long as there aren't too many other people camping there. It's a good idea to walk the area on foot first - we had to help a couple of people who got down to the bottom and had a hard time getting turned back around.
The easy access campsites are fairly close together and there aren't many of them. According to some campers we talked to, this area has become really popular and they said it is far more crowded than when they camped here last year. If you have a 4x4, short wheelbase vehicle, you can get another mile to mile and a half past the main camping area, and there are some beautiful, secluded spots back there.
Cell phone signal is stronger by the highway, and weakens as you get down toward the trailhead. We were camped right at the trailhead, and consistently had one to two bars of Verizon without a signal booster.
The area is very quiet at night, but there is some traffic during the day from locals who come in to hike and mountain bike. Due to the proximity of other campers, this area wasn't as secluded as we normally like. For that reason alone, this one doesn't make our list of top camping spots. Luckily our neighbors were wonderful and we enjoyed them very much. The views are fantastic and access to town is very easy.

We are so grateful to have stumbled across this gem. The access road is well marked with a sign (you can’t miss it) and there are a few camping spots along the road that fit mid sized rigs. We camped on the last spot before the road narrowed, offering beautiful views of the mountains and the valley.
Solar is great. No water or trash receptacle so fill up before you arrive.
We weren’t able to boost our signal to a workable speed, so we visited Las Cruces nearby and found a few great coffee shops. It was nice to camp in what felt like a remote wilderness, but what was actually only 10 minutes from town.
We heard a pack of coyotes howling at night, and saw two by our camper during the day.

Fresh gravel makes the drive in super easy. The sites are relatively close together (all are within about a half mile stretch), but we still enjoyed our stay. Views were outstanding, especially at sunset. Super clean. If you don’t have a trailer and have decent clearance, you can continue farther down the road to some true disbursed camping.
FREE WATER available at the La Cueva Picnic Area about 2 miles up the road.

360 View of the Organ Mts! Just beautiful sunrise to sunset! New gravel makes dry camping so easy! Thanks to John G’s review we came here! Be sure to hike to dripping springs via the BLM office if you visit. Come before sunset to easily find your spot.

Drove down past all the easy gravel pullouts to a more remote spot. Recommend high clearance vehicle if doing the same as it is very uneven, Rocky and eroded. Spot was great for views.
Some hypodermic needles found neaby but no other trash.
It was pretty breezy and I imagine you'd want to watch for high wind or rain coming through.

This is a very nice, clean, and picturesque site. Fairly quiet, but there is a road nearby (dripping springs road) and some other traffic on the campsite road. Overall a great spot with nice mountain views.

It was easy to access (paved road most of the way there) and had beautiful views of the mountain right out our door.
It's very close to Las Cruces and has so many fantastic hikes (including the trailhead it's on), and lots of wildlife in the area.
Definitely coming back next year!

This was quintessential New Mexico boondocking. It was easy to find, easy to access, open and free and absolutely beautiful with the desert in one direction and the Organ Mountains in the other. Very close to Las Cruces, but you can't see town from the campground. It was near perfect, until about 1am in the morning when a storm came up and it sounded like the trailer was being blown apart. If you are at all familiar with the wind directions or can tell, be sure to park your rig into the wind. The wind was hitting us from the side and it was so strong and severe that we suffered body damage to the trailer. There was a ranger who came by to check on us in the evening, and lots of locals using the nearby areas for hiking or desert views or whatever but they cleared out at dark. Great place if you can predict (or have access to check) the weather. The sites are about half a mile off pavement but the gravel is not too rough.
