There isn’t a lot of space for many vehicles, but we had a great spot with plenty of room since there wasn’t anyone else boondocking there. It is a parking lot for the Achenbach trail, but there were only a few cars/hikers coming and going. Being only 20 minutes from Las Cruces, surprisingly, there wasn’t much noise or light pollution. The stars were bright and beautiful and it was nice and quiet and peaceful! The hike on the trail is awesome exercise! There’s even a neat cave. We saw deer and a coyote close by us. Few rabbits here and there. Wonderful, peaceful location!

Overall Rating

Peaceful parking area at trailhead leading into the Achenbach Canyon. Level area with a pull through and existing fire ring. Wonderful views of the Las Cruces valley at sunset.

To reach the parking area one must drive through a subdivision with paved road. There is a large dip in the road that is signed that may be an issue for larger rigs. When you turn onto Cuates Canyon Road you will drive on packed gravel that is slightly washboard. No large potholes but take it slow. Follow the road to the sign that says Public Access and turn left uphill. This road is rocky but does not require any 4X4 or high clearance if you take it slow.

The pull through next to the parking area has space for one large rig or several small ones.

Note: this area is near the White Sands Missle Range with associated sounds.
