We came from the Sand Dunes and spent the night. First bit is bumpy but any car could make it. However, after awhile it becomes very rocky and you would need a SUV or a Truck. Great place with amazing views! Highly recommend!!

We stayed here July 22-24, we arrive in the evening and didn’t have any issues finding a spot for our tent. Like the other reviewers said there are two turn offs to the left of the gravel road with very large areas to camp. There are also about 3 smaller areas on the right side of the gravel road that is plenty of space for tent campers. Further up the road we saw many tent campers up the hill. We decided not to venture up there because the weather was questionable. The road in wasn’t bad, bumpy but definitely not an issue. This was very easy camping for us, plenty of space for our dog to explore, no bugs, beautiful weather. Looked like it was going to be stormy but it ended up passing quickly over us. Very accessible to the Sand Dunes, hiking opportunities, and cute cafes in Alamosa (highly recommend checking out Roast Cafe, friendly people, great coffee, outside eating, WiFi etc). Overall awesome spot and great verizon coverage!

We stayed here for three nights in July. The road was washboarded, but otherwise easy to navigate for the first mile or so until it gets very rocky as it increases in elevation. There are two large pullout areas before the road hits the rocky area, as well as several side roads you can take that have smaller pullout areas. The large pullout areas are suitable for any size rig. We filled up on water in Great Sand Dunes NP, and could have used their dump station if needed.
The sites are fairly exposed and sandy - the wind is constantly blowing given the topography, so anticipate a fine layer of dust/sand on everything after a day or two. The main access road leads to a popular offroading trail and had a fairly robust stream of Jeeps/ATVs/etc. headed up to it throughout the week.
Cell phone service was reasonably good for AT&T, but dropped out occasionally.

Stayed here 14 nights starting 6/1/20. The road in is quite bumpy. The first pull off is on the left side of the road approximately 1/2 mile in. There is plenty of room for several RV's of any size. The is another large pull off approximately another 1/2 mile further also with plenty of room for several RV's of any size. There is a smaller pull off between the two large ones on the right side of the road. I would not recommend taking a RV or a camper any further up this road as it gets very rough. This is a pretty busy area. Lots of one nighters in tents/SUV's going to hike up the mountain. There is currently a burn ban, however, one RVer decided to have a fire anyway. There is an insane amount of wind, sand and dust here. If you leave for the day with your windows open, you will have a sandbox in your camper when you get home. Good solar here. This is a nice, quiet spot. Everyone staying has been respectful. It's about 10 miles from Great Sand Dunes National Park. We used the dump station and got water from Blanca RV Park. They charged $8 to dump and $1 for every 10 gallons of water. The people there are super nice. They even allowed us to have a large package shipped there. Their convenience store is nice too. The USPS does allow general delivery here and there are Amazon lockers in Alamosa about 15 minutes away. I would stay here again, but get used to sweeping 3 times a day every day due to the sand. Verizon hotspot got excellent speeds.

Great spot for visiting sand dunes and beautiful views. The sunset is incredible and there are wide spots and many pull offs that any kind of rig can make it to. I was able to do all my conference calls from this location. The wind gets a little high at night. The stars come out super strong. No pollution. You can see perfectly. Enjoy it!

Stayed here 5/24/2020 to 6/6/2020. This was a really great site. For the most part Verizon service is excellent here. I stayed in the first large pullout on the left and for some reason cell service seemed to be worse here than anywhere else, but once I raised my booster I had full bars. I think it's just because this site is below a hill. Otherwise, the further you go up the road the better the service seems to get and you shouldn't need a booster at all.
On the weekends this area can get very busy. I arrived on a Sunday and it was pretty cleared out by then, and during the week it was pretty quiet, but on Friday night a ton of people rolled in. Everyone seemed to be quiet and respectful while I was there though. It's true that the road is pretty washboarded and bumpy, but take it slow and it's not an issue. There are three or four very large pullouts that can easily fit several rigs before the road starts going up and getting rocky. I noticed a lot of people just pulled into the first pullout even though there were a bunch of rigs in it and the others were empty. You might as well go down a little further because you can turn around in the pullouts further down the road if you need to.
The location here is great. Just down the road you can visit Zapata Falls and of course Great Sand Dunes National Park. It's about 20-25 minutes to get into Alamosa which has most of the stores and supplies you might need. I dumped at the KOA just down the road and they charged $10, however, I would recommend looking elsewhere for water because they charged me $20 just to fill up my rig.
As others have said, it can get very windy here in the afternoon but the mornings and evenings were generally beautiful. Overall I really enjoyed my time here because the location was great and the views were amazing.

We stayed here 1 night after a full day at the NP. It was easy to locate. Road was a little ruff, but doable in my AWD. The farther up the road you drive, the ruffer the road gets.
Many people using this camping area when we were there in March 2020.
Fire rings existing
Verizon worked good
AT&T not so good

FREE. Nice place to stay, very close to Sand Dunes NP. The road in is washboarded but not to bad. There are some large open spots not far in. The road gets really bad the further you go. Our site was 1.5 miles in and would not recommend trailers going to much further than that. Good cell, no tv on the scan.

Decent for an overnight stop. But be careful if it’s super dry. Road and camp grounds can be pretty soft and we almost got stuck in a 2500 truck and trailer. Broken glass around campsites.

Not too far from the national park, or Alamosa, or a few wildlife areas. At the base of Blanca Mountain. This is also the start of a rough Jeep trail another mile up the mountain that is said to be the toughest in America. We didn’t explore that.
Decent VeriZon signal. Mediocre att signal.
This exact spot and one or two others can handle two or three large rigs no problem. Lots of washboard on the road coming in but the only tough part might be at the cattle grate when leaving the highway which is a bit of a step. Take it slow.
