We camped at the boat launch under the trees with no other campers around us. Reservoir has been drained so traffic from fishermen is no more.

The reservoir has been drained. Only one pavilion available for camping. The closed roads have a lot of flood damage which resulted in a quiet camping experience. Where there are cows there are flies.

I was passing by heading east on 70 and just wanting to see what the situation was here. I’ve stayed in the past and it’s a nice spot with bugs being the primary drawback.
There is a Road Closed sign on a construction barrier blocking the road that circles around to all the sites. However the main parking lot and boat ramp area are accessible. If you’ve got anything hitched you’ll be limited to the main area. No one else was there when I drove through earlier today. I didn’t check the the doors on the vault toilets but I’d bet they’re open and they’re also fairly new.
If you’re not towing you have a couple options for getting to the other sites though at your own risk. Enough vehicles have driven around the barrier to leave discernible ruts. The other option is to take the way at the end of the main parking area. It does have an Authorized Vehicles Only sign. I don’t remember it being there before but it is now. I also don’t remember that road being so sketchy. Long grass has outpaced the frequency of use of the little road and you’ll be driving on flattened grass instead of dirt. The constant declination towards the reservoir and unreliable traction makes it doubtable but a forward driver with four wheel drive can use said route. Use your own judgment for the uphill to the last pavilion which leads to the main road there.
Make no fuss leave no mess.

West entrance by the restrooms was open but the road back to the campsites also had an authorized vehicles only sign blocking the road. I probably could’ve chances staying in the lot by the restrooms but it seemed extra sketchy and I didn’t want to get a knock in the middle of the night to move. Had to go to the La Quinta Inn in Limon because the truck stops were full. The La Quinta has rv parking and my combined 49ft of truck/TT fit fine.

Arrived near dusk on 6/20/23 and you could not access from the east due to flooding. Went in on west side and the reservoir was extremely high from the rain. We went down one point and there was a minivan that looked like they had been here a while as they had all sorts of items hanging in that pavilion. We circled back around to the first spot and set up we had read previous reviews so we’re already sprayed down with repellent. We started a fire and got ready to relax. An hour into sleeping we heard coyotes near but the house across the street had a motion light that kept going off. It was rather creepy but we tried to rest as we knew it was just a “sleeping spot” on our way west. There was something trying to enter the tent at one point because the zipper was rattling and u could hear sniffing and movement. We turned all the flashlights in and went out to get in van and when I turned on headlights there was a juvenile mountain lion 50 feet from us. We waited until morning and packed up. Definitely won’t try that again.

Just a word of caution, if you park by or near the boat ramp, the local mosquitoes are brutal. In my opinion it is the best place for a larger rig as you can turn around. I have a 25’ tt so it was pretty easy for me. Larger rigs may have issues further into the grounds. If you go for a walk, put lots of tick repellent on b/c there are lots of ticks here! Vault toilets, no showers, no hookups, very quiet. Coyotes in the distance.

Beautiful Area that has spaced out sites for all sized vehicles. Bathrooms included and right off highway near gas station, diner, liquor store, and dollar general. Will have to drive mild dirt roads to enter. We were the only ones camping in the wildlife area on that evening.

“We Made A Hasty Retreat Due To Mosquitos.”
noted 6/8/2023
We noted that no one was present other than us. There were level spots to camp. I had a 16’ Basecamp. I would not take anything too large into this area. The mosquitos were swarming me within minutes of exiting my vehicle. It was an immediate no-way for us. We moved on to Hugo by the park. Prefer train and road noise over bug bites.
