When I arrived to the campground, it was nearing dusk. Even though it is not right next to the freeway, and you must take a little dirt road drive to get there, there was a surprising amount of traffic going in and out of the recreation area. (I think other people were looking for a place to spend the night while traveling I70, but there were a lot of pick up trucks. . so, not sure). The campground is at the bottom of the hill, when you first enter the BLM land. The neighborhood surrounding is nice. Spot 1, is on the left just before you see the campground sign. It is marked with a tent and a 1. It is adjacent to a footpath and the creek. All of the spots, except one, are pull outs. The other is down a little hill to the creek (which is on the other side of the road at that point. I think that was spot 7. If you continue up the hill, you will see a parking lot and vault toilet on your left. When I got there, a camper was in site 7, the remainder of sites were taken by trailers (pull-type), but I saw nobody at them. I also saw no signs of vagrant life (Big water jugs, or untidy set ups). As I went up the hill, I saw a couple of dispersed campsites with fire rings (located just past the parking lot). They were empty and I considered one of them, which was a sizable pull out on the left side of the road (cliff side) with a large rock formation and a big fire pit. Probably should have taken that one, as it is away from trees and the creek. Down toward the parking lot on the other side of the road is an even bigger spot. . but it had a cross with flowers (little shrine) set up and indicated that someone had taken his own life there. . . I went back down the hill and pulled into spot 1. I did not exit my cherokee, but I did pull back to level out (because the spot has a significant roll if you just pull in sideways. My jeep has a leveling function. And as I leveled it, I saw that I was backing up to a little pile of rocks. Apparently I was too close to it, because a critter got into my vehicle ( a chipmunk, I believe) and wreaked a bit of havoc before I persuaded it to exit the way it came in. (I had to secure my bags of food (which probably attracted it) with me in the back, and set up motion lights to scare it every time it came into the footwells of my front seats (oh my). It was furry and brown, I did not get a great look at it, but it had access to the columns of my vehicle and the sunroof track and was small enough to navigate all of that at a running pace (it actually did laps around my sunroof track). It even got behind dash mounted computer/gps screen. Needless to say, it was a wake-up call for keeping my food in airtight containers from now on. Thankful it wasn't a fed bear. Be careful.

We arrived around dusk using the coordinates from Campendium. It was a peaceful area to rest for the night with the creek rushing in the background. We even heard an owl!

Many pull offs on Deep Creek (Coffee Pot) Rd. Found one just across the river from some beautiful out croppings.
Cappy would stay here again
