Access off the highway is very easy and short. The road is definitely full of washboards. However it is short so we just went slow. We are driving a 2005 Sprinter Van. I would say it was busy. Arrived late on a Friday night and the lot was pretty full. The access was easy but bumpy ( nothing big but tons of tiny tiny ridges that made for a bumpy ride). The view was amazing! Great cell service too! Lot was pretty level as well! Would stay again!

We parked here the week prior to Memorial Day Weekend to grab a sport prior to the holiday. Due to a late season snow it was almost empty. The views are breathtaking and the roads in decent condition.
The area below the dam belongs to the state of Colorado, and once past the dam it is National Forest Land. The area is well signed as to where you can camp, especially since the lake is very low due to drought. The Colorado Trail and Continental Divide trail pass through the area and there is a nice 8 mile loop around the lake.
In general most sites are level and large. You have a few that are uneven but they tend to be taken by vans and tents.
We did see one rig below the dam that was residing, but San Isobel Forest and Chaffee County has been announcing in articles that they will be patrolling more for that kind of thing.
With a larger rig, be wary of traveling a road without scouting, they have fenced off new areas and you may find yourself in a bind.
Once the camping season is in full swing, this area is packed. We drove past it last year and it can get very crowded (for which I removed a star).
But watching the sun set fire to the snow capped Mt Elbert in the evening is worth it.

I was parked right off the road in back of the dam. Great view of the surrounding mountains. A few spots will accommodate larger rigs. The dirt road in is badly maintained with very severe washboarding.

4 stars only because we couldn’t use the atv here as the trail for it was closed and the road is a bit bumpy and steep for big rigs. But the rest was amazing. Super clean spots, quiet and space is good. We are here during the week so it may be different on the weekends.
