Gorgeous (in a primitive way) location with panoramic views of Mt. Whitney and surrounding peaks.
We went "in-between storms in the Sierra" in mid-April and expected the place to be nearly empty so we were starting to panic when we arrived after an 8-hour drive to find the first loop completely full! Fortunately, we found a dozen or so sites still available in the other two loops. There were hurricane-force winds on 395 that day so maybe more people than normal pulled in to get away from it (needless to say, the campground, which is completely open was also extremely windy for 2 of our 3 days there.)
The sites are all decently sized, but some are more level than others.
There were some reports that the road into the park was of concern... not really. True, it's like a mile of 1-way road, but there are a few turnouts and, more importantly, as the road is simply crossing the desert, the entire expanse is in sight the whole time so you have plenty of warning if someone is coming. It's not like you're going around blind corners on the side of a cliff. The numerous, aggressive speed bumps are much more of a nuisance than the narrow road.
The vault toilets were very clean and not once did I even get a whiff of foul odor. The whole campground was exceptionally clean (if dirt can be clean!). It seems the people that come here tend to be very responsible and respectful. We saw no loud or obnoxious campers (but then, it was so windy, it would be hard to tell!)
Water is rare. There is a faucet at the entrance by the dump station but I didn't check to see if it was potable. Our loop had one faucet and I expected to see a "don't fill your tanks" sign on it, but there wasn't, so we quickly stopped and grabbed 15 gallons or so.
The surrounding Alabama Hills are ruggedly beautiful, especially during the golden hour. The dirt roads are in good condition and just about any car should be able to go to the Arches trailhead off of Movie Rd. (Though many of the side trails require a higher-clearance vehicle)
The town of Lone Pine is only a 10-minute drive away. The Movie Museum was fun. Gas and food were on the expensive side, but I've seen worse. The Park Service visitor center outside of town is very nice. Manzanar is a must-do historic site about 20 miles from camp.
Whitney Portal Rd is right next to camp and leads you up to the trailhead and other interesting attractions up Mt. Whitney, but both times we tried to go, the road was closed for work. The guy said to come back after 3:00 - we came back at 4:15 - he was gone, but the road was still closed. Drat. Major disappointment there, but at least I still came home with some great photos of other things.
I got basic LTE on my Sprint-based phone but my wife got nothing on her Visible (old Verizon network based).
It's hard to give a primitive camp a full 5-stars, but it probably deserves it for the scenery and low cost.

For only $8 you get a nice sized site, fire pit and table. Solid Verizon cell service throughout. We arrived 4/1 and the weather was perfect, a little windy but nice most of the time. Views are awesome and my dog loved playing in the little creek running through the campground. I was concerned at first about neighbors feeling close but it was honestly so peaceful and the sites each maintained a nice level of privacy. Everyone else camping there were very quiet and nice. Would definitely return!

Stayed here in mid-March 2022 during the week. It was very nice and quiet. Many people come just
for 1 night and go first thing in AM. Got a little windy one day. No hook ups at all so basically paid boondocking. To level my camper, I had to get a little creative. Overall, all good with no drama.

Take your time and find one that is good for your rig. I had plenty of solar on the 1 clear day with portable 2 100w panels. and don't forget to find Lathe Arch just past (going ccw) the Mobius Arch.--a cute little thing :) Lots of vacant sites mid week, but Fri PM they all filled up. It looks like one of the Pay to Dump fixtures has been added to the dump station. It was covered up when I left--so I can't be sure. Water flow was being tested--but I don't think it was left on. There are signs at the frost-frees that it is non-potable water! My stay ended on a Fri, so I needed to leave Sat AM. A BLM Ranger advised me to be out of the c/g by 7am to avoid folks entering with an RV. The road in is very narrow with few pullouts. No way can 2 rvs pass in most places, and with a towed I could not back up. Minus 1 star only becuz of the narrow road.

We stayed during February, so the water was turned off and the dump station was closed, but there were trash cans available, pit toilets, and a camp host on site. Sites are FCFS, and while it was wide open on Tuesday, unsurprisingly, it was less so on Friday afternoon. There are many sites that will accommodate any size RV, but they vary immensely in levelness (bring plenty of blocks).
Verizon worked great, without a booster, and there is so much room for walking our dog.
If ever in the area, we’d definitely stay here again.

It's winter, so the water fill and dump station are closed. The large trash bins were a nice convenience. Each site is equipped with a concrete picnic table, a large deep fire ring, and a lantern pole. We had great Verizon & TMobile which we needed since we work from the road. We don't typically stay in campgrounds, as we prefer to boondock. This was a great experience even with lots of other campers around. Everyone was respectful and the sites are well spaced.
