Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a uniquely beautiful state park with numerous hiking and mountain biking trails. Unfortunately, due to recent heavy rains, the hiking and bike trails were closed. We stayed at the Hackberry Campground, which we preferred due to the presence of more trees and, in some cases, vegetation between campsites. We liked campsites 10-18 on the outer edge because of their spacing and vegetation allowing for some privacy. The Mesquite Campground had some great views, but fewer trees. A few of the campsites have partial shade, but most offer little shade other than a covered picnic table. The hiking and off-road bike trails looked interesting. We were here in early September. It was very hot during the day (90's), but cooled down sufficiently at night to turn off our air conditioner.

There was a line at check in even though we reserved ahead. I was happily surprised when they told us 2 miles down the canyon was our campground Sagebrush. All sites in that campground are equally good. No sewer hookup but electric and water. Trails were closed. Looked like due to washout from recent flash flooding. Nice star gazing.

We stayed in site 90 of the Mesquite Campground, Breathtaking views, amazing sunrise and sunsets on the canyon walls. Some cell service, and clear view of the sky, so Starlink worked great. Even though trails were closed due to recent flood damage, was still a fantastic stay.

We got a spot last minute in the Juniper campground lot #108 with full power hookups and water for about $26. Good thing we have power too so we can have continuous air conditioning. Inside Palo Duro Canyon are a number of hikes. The most popular is the lighthouse. Take water, we saw many people with very little water and even with 3L I ran out. You can refill at the trail head, but it isn’t very tasty water… wet but a little chlorine in flavor. You are going to need to swat the biting flies. Note: AT&T has some service but Verizon is zero bars in the canyon

But, according to several sources, they do not bite and aren't interested in humans. They will, however, jump, which didn't thrill me to know at all. It was extremely quiet at night when the coyotes weren't howling. There are two dump stations. The one closest to the entrance/exit of the park is the best for big rigs. The other one has a tight turn that can be difficult to maneuver. The wifi was better than we've had anywhere when camping. We will return here again. Our rate includes all camping and day use fees.

At the age of 68, I still considered the most awesome place that I had visited was Disney Land, until my arrival at the Palo Duro Canyon State Park. OMG! Simply amazing!
I had booked my stay 3 months ahead of time and the longest stay at one site that I could find was 3 days. And that was not enough to truly enjoy the Park. The State of Texas got it right with this one. If you are a military veteran, you get a discount. If you are a disabled Vet with at least 50% disability, as I am, it's dirt cheap!
I could easily write a book about this place. Even with the drawbacks of Zero TV or Cell signal (except AT&T), and the not-so-clean shower facilities, The sheer awesomeness of the Canyon keeps the ratings as exceptional.
On a side note, it's difficult to judge a site via the website. Many, as mine was, are not level.

Quiet campground despite a lot of big rigs with big AC units. At night, coyotes singing and dark skies.
Site 119 is the only site without a roof on the patio shelter. Makes it unusable because exposed to sun and the table is dirty.

Camping, hiking, mountain biking and beautiful park. We prefer free BLM or National Forrest land, but a very nice hidden gem in Texas. Will definitely return.

Something to consider- There are only dump stations, no sewer hookups. If you are staying in Mesquite, be prepared to tow your external tank a few miles minimum to reach the dump station. The other loops are closer but didn’t have as nice of views or as big of sites in our opinion.
