If you’re coming to see the canyon, you must camp here! What a special privilege to be able to camp down inside this beautiful canyon! The campsites are along the 8 mile loop inside the canyon. We were camping out of our SUV and assigned to the Fortress Cliff camp area site #43. AT&T cell service at our site was functional but weak. There were two porta-potties in our area and you could drive to bigger restrooms the next site over. Each campsite by us included a covered picnic area and place for a fire. We woke up to an armadillo and two deer nearby. Very peaceful and quiet and great place for stargazing. We booked two days in advance and paid $16 online and paid an additional $10 at the entrance station. If you have a Texas State Parks pass that $10 fee would be waived. The sign at the entrance station said no availability without reservation. Though there were many open sites. Maybe you can take a chance getting a spot without a reservation, but we booked online to be safe. We would definitely camp here again!

We wanted to see the musical "Texas" so booked to stay here during the first week that it was open (it opens 6/1). We knew it was possible that it would be getting hot, and it has been uncomfortably warm in the afternoons.
When we originally did the booking, we could only get one night, but I kept on watching the booking site online and eventually the next night also came available. Although the park shows full, there are sites available in the campground - I don't know whether people aren't showing up to use their reservations or whether the park keeps some sites "just in case". As it turns out, we probably would have been ok with just having the night that we had booked to see the musical, as it was too hot for us to do much in the afternoon anyway (100F +).
We were assigned site 139 in Sagebrush Campground; site 139 is just across the campground road from the trail to the amphitheater where "Texas" is performed, so we were able to walk to/from the show.
On the morning after the show, we got up and out and did the first 1.25 miles of the Lighthouse hike - to the viewpoint of the rock formation. We are not big hikers, but it was a do-able hike for us. We got there just before 7am and were back to the parking lot by 840am - temperatures were heading to the high 80s by 9am, so it was good to have gotten there early.
We were able to get internet on our AT&T MiFi device with our cellular booster. No signal at all on T-Mobile. Verizon would sometimes show signal but couldn't really use it except up at the top of the canyon (at the overlook or ranger station). A person I talked with at the musical said that her AT&T phone got service all over the canyon - they were staying at Mesquite Campground.
We have a 43' bus and tow a Jeep behind - we took it very slow down the canyon road - using the engine brake and first gear on the transmission. Around the curves, we had to use all of our lane and a small part of the lane coming up the hill, but traffic was light and people made way for us.

We had a great time here last weekend. Improved sites have water and full electric , NO SEWER. Dump stations were convenient.
Bathrooms have showers, flush toilets and running water.
Loads of trails for many combinations of hikers, bikes and horses. There is an equestrian campground at the turn around in the park road.
One hour trail rides are available at the Old West Stables.
The park store has souvenirs, snacks, a snack bar and gas/fuel. The French fries smelled fabulous so I dashed right out of there!
The El Coronado Lodge and three nearby cabins were built by the CCC.
Canyon, TX is the closest town and it is the home of West Texas A & M where you can visit the fabulous Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. There is a nice square in town with shops and restaurants.
Campground reservations suggested.

We arrived on a Monday and left on a Friday. Our spot was clean, fairly level though I did have to raise the "road" side of the rig about two inches. Bathrooms were very clean but seemed to lack hot water (possibly from heavy use). A fire ban was in effect, but fire rings were present. Roadrunners visited the site on more than one occasion and were very cool to watch. The park was very quiet even when most of the spots were filled. Neither our AT&T hot spot through our truck nor any of our Verizon had service so you'll have to hike to the top of the canyon perhaps for service of any kind. Our spot came complete with 15, 30 or 50 amp service that seemed very well behaved. Water was also available at the time of this writing and we used it frequently both for drinking and for cooking.
The bird blind at this park seemed a bit in disrepair, though the hiking trails were well maintained and easy to walk or drive to. The interpretive center is also worth seeing as it is loaded with history and a decent amount of trinkets you can purchase.
Locally, the town of Canyon is about 14 miles away. A small college town it has everything you'll need from fuel to laundry to groceries. If you wake up on a windy day and just want to scoot to town for breakfast, "KJ's Cafe" is a great spot.

Palo Duro Canyon is in our “backyard” so we frequent the State Park regularly throughout the year. We love venturing down into the canyon to camp or just simply spend the day. There are hiking trails for all types whether you are an extreme hiker or one who prefers to stroll along. Palo Duro Canyon State Park is great at having activities planned too so make sure to check out their Facebook page for upcoming events. We recently ventured down there for a “Snipe hunt” at Easter that was wonderful! It was a unique experience getting to hunt the campground at night for Snipe Eggs (Easter Eggs). We highly recommend this park to anyone passing through or looking for a destination. The views and scenery are truly breath taking. If you are camping during the summer bug spray, water, and sun visors are highly recommended. The Texas heat is alive and well but very doable when prepared. We love this little slice of paradise!

We have been residents of Texas most of our lives and never knew about this place until a couple years ago! What a treasure — This state park could easily qualify as a NP! There are three campgrounds suitable for RV’s: Sagebrush, Mesquite and Juniper. Sagebrush is nearest the amphitheater (where a summer show is held), is flat and sites are relatively close together. Mesquite (where we stayed) is at the far end of the park and is a designated dark-sky area — the stars are amazing there! It’s more hilly, offers opportunities for hiking around the campground and is much more picturesque than Sagebrush. We were able to get 2 bars of AT&T cell service from our campsite (other places in the park afforded no service). While there the week before Christmas (we had spectacular weather with temps in low 60’s), it was super quiet with only a half dozen or so other campers there during the beginning of the week. Juniper, the newest RV CG, is in the middle of the park and is paved in new asphalt. It is smaller, very nice and the restrooms are newer. We’d stay in either Mesquite again or Juniper. We really enjoyed hiking the park trails. They were marked well and maintained. The entire park was very clean.

We arrived at the Palo Duro Canyon State Park October 29, 2017 for overnight camping. We had reserved our camp site online in the Juniper Campground. Leaving Amarillo, Tx in the morning, our Garmin GPS had no trouble navigating to the state park. We were charged a $10 park entrance fee on top of our $26 camping fee. The state park is very large and the Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. We made a stop at the Visitor's Center and watched an interesting film about the history of the area and the influence of the five tribes of Comanche Indians in the Southern Plains. There are five campgrounds in the park and we stayed in the newest one which is $2 more expensive then the others for RV camping. We had a large pull-through site with a covered picnic table and fire ring w/ water and electric. We grilled outdoors but had to use mosquito coils and bug repellent to keep the flies and gnats away. On a prior trip there we hiked to a nearby cave from the Juniper Campground, that trip was in late May and there were no flying insects bothering us then. The bathroom and showers were clean. We were told there wasn't any Verizon Service so we were prepared to be 'Unwired'. But our Weboost Drive 4g-X RV Cellular Booster was able to boost the Verizon signal from 1 bar of 1x to 3 bars of 4G in the bottom of the canyon, good enough to stream Youtube and make phone calls. On the way out the next morning we used the dump station provided.

Mesquite is at the far end from the entrance, so it is very quiet. The sites are spacious and very picturesque, with a covered picnic table. Mesquite is an internationally certified dark sky location, but there was a full moon while I was there, so not many stars were visible. The canyon is 600 ft deep at the state park, so there is no cell phone service at the bottom. I drove up to the top each day to get a signal. I got 3 bars of Verizon 4G at the parking lot above the visitor center, and 4 bars at a pull-off between the visitor center and the main gate. The canyon is a long way from anywhere, but I recommend a trip out to the Panhandle Plains Museum in Canyon, and to drive across the canyon lower down on hwy 207.
