It honestly just felt too manufactured for me. The lack of shade at most spots combined w the beaming, harsh sun wasnt very fun. It was also very loud, the campsites are right across from eachother. theres very little privacy.
i'll def be back here just for a day pass to hike but i doubt ill ever camp here again. theres more privacy in the dog canyon dispersed site.

As of mid-May, 2021, all campsites are by reservation only via reserveamerica.com.
That website accurately describes each site's size (driveway length) and amenities.
Select your site based on the amenities you need/want.
All sites that have electric hookups also have water.
All sites have fire rings / grills and picnic tables, but not all picnic tables have shade covers.
The volunteer hosts sell firewood for the Friends of Dog Canyon.
The volunteer hosts keep the campgrounds, showers, and toilets clean. These folks are unpaid, so be nice to them: don't litter (not even a cigarette butt, or they have to pick it up) and do PUT OUT YOUR FIRE COLD.
They'll loan you a sled/saucer for White Sands!
No glass containers.
Dogs must be leashed.
At this time, the DUMP STATION IS CLOSED but you can dump for no charge at the Texaco at the north end of Alamogordo (or at the Chamber of Commerce in town depending on the construction situation -- call ahead).
Visitor Center is currently open only on the weekends.
Call the main park number and listen to the recording for updates.

This is a pretty secluded state park with amazing views, quiet and spaced out sites. It is very clean ans well maintained. You are about 30 minutes from White Sands.

Oliver lee Memorial Sate Park is a gem of a campground. The campground butts right up to the Lincoln National Forest. The views of the mountains and White Sands are exceptional. When you arrive make sure your the wooden post with your spot number on it has your name and date of your arrival attached to it. There is no attendant to meet you to confirm your arrival or tell you where your spot is. Cell service was spotty. Sometimes it worked great and other times it would be impossible to get online. We were using both AT&T and T-mobile. The grounds are well taken care of. Don't miss this little hidden gem.

We secured a last minute 4 night reservation at this beautiful perfectly maintained park. We had considered staying at the BLM land directly below...but honestly feel safer staying in a park. We had a no hook up site # 37 which was huge and far enough from your neighbor that you didn't hear a thing. Fresh water was across from our site. We didn't use the bathrooms and the showers were still closed. The visitor center was closed but we enjoyed the beautiful Cactus Garden. This park has two trails....one an easy nature trail that was beautiful, and Dog Canyon which is a 9.5 difficult trail.....we did the first mile and back....the views were incredible....no need to fly a drone. We also visited White Sands only 30 minutes away!! Closest store is Dollar General 5 miles. We can't wait to return.....Thank you New Mexico!!!

Its remote from any major cities, but it is a spectacular state park. Well maintained and clean. Great hike from the visitor center. I will try to find a way back and stay for a few nights.

Located at the base of the beautiful Sacramento Mountains, this lovely state park has tons to offer for all visitors: hiking, ranch tours, stargazing, and of course camping. We spent the day at White Sands National Park before checking-in, which is about 45 mins from this park, so you can easily stay here and enjoy the sands. We initially made online reservations, but all electric sites were taken; so we reserved a non-electric in hopes to upgrade once we got there. Luckily a few electric spots were open and the camp host was nice enough to explain we could just pull up and pay the difference. The views are spectacular, the stargazing will blow your mind. Take the hiking trail through Dog Canyon and tour the Lee family 19th Century Ranch House. Very friendly staff and sites are very well maintained.

We decided to stay here because for $10 a night we got to use the dump station (that had potable water) and they loaned us all sleds, one for each of my 4 kids, to use at White Sands. Only about 30 minute drive to White Sands from the park.
