I spent 7 days camping along the rim of this vastly beautiful location. Fair warning, the winds can be brutal, it is South Dakota after all and strong winds are just part of living here. The location was super easy to get to. From Wall, SD I drove south on 240, drive about 6 miles and turned left onto dirt road (43.8931,-102.2386) You can see the tall towers. There is plenty of parking options with spectacular views. The morning sunrise is an event in itself, so have coffee ready and go sit outside and enjoy it. The sunsets are just amazing. The entry to this location is only about 1 mile from the entrance into Bad Lands National Park. Other areas of interest are of course Wall Drugs, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site and the Prairie Homestead in Philip, SD.
After enjoying the sunset be sure to be amazed at nature's next show, The Night Sky, which is absolutely stunning. Be sure to arrive before late afternoon/early evening

We stayed here 2 nights, May 8th and 9th 2021. This was one of our planned must see stops on a cross country trip. We loved it! We were towing a single axle travel trailer. It had been raining when we arrived, but the road wasn't muddy at all. It was rough and you need to go slow, but gravel had been recently added to the holes in the road. Wasn't crowded at all. We could see several RVs scattered along the rim, but with large distances between them. We left our trailer and went into Wall for a burger at the famous Wall Drug. Delicious!
I had read reviews about the serious wind that can come up from the rim at times, with the recommendation to park facing the edge, not parallel to the rim. I did that, and if the wind ever got up during the night, I wasn't aware of it. We had a couple of rain showers pass by, but it never got muddy. It's very rocky. Got a great rainbow view from our front door!
There are no gates here anymore, they've been replaced with cattle guards.
I'll definitely stay here again if I'm ever on the same route!

Great book docking spot even for big rigs. Wonderful view, feels remote yet so close to the town of Wall.
Recommended for off season - it’s busy here during peak season.

Arrived at 1:30am, it's easy to miss the entrance but easy enough to find it. There are 2 entrances, the first one (closer to Wall), despite being lower elevation seems less muddy, upper one was more rutted and muddy. Windy first night, like REALLY windy, glad I wasn't trying to setup a tent. Other two nights were fantastic. I'm sure this place gets a lot of people in the warmer months, because even in the colder months (mid-late Oct) there was 15-20 other campers in the middle of the week. Still, plenty of level spots to go around. Also, coyotes at night howling at the full moon, and mountain goats hung out the last night about 10 feet from my rig the whole night. If there was a decent amount of rain I get the feeling you'd want 4 wheel drive if you're not staying closer to the road.

Planned to stay 4 nights or more but only stayed 2. Heavy rains then high winds (50 mph) forced us into Wall. Also too dangerous to tow on the highway.. It took 4 wheel drive just to get back to the highway. If rains and winds are forecasted during your stay, change plans.

Great place, exceeded my expectations. Will go back again for sure. Very safe, able to leave your things out. We got there early in day, had a great spot, but if you come in late, just wait until morning and you'll be able to locate a great spot too. Wildlife viewing so exciting and so close to Badlands NP.

This place was amazing! We got the perfect spot right on the ridge. The ride in was pretty bumpy in some areas with huge potholes, but all in all not bad. This is a very popular spot but we had no trouble finding an excellent location on a Saturday afternoon.

Plan for the cooler temps at night if you’re there in early September. We didn’t realize how cool it would get at night and didn’t expect to have to deal with colder weather then. For a one night stop, this was pretty ideal even though we got there late and didn’t get a spot right on the edge.

What else is there to say... exactly what I expected from reviews. Only detractors are finding a spot with the crowd and wind. Did I mention it's windy.
