We camped here when visiting Badlands NP. We had one of the best spots in the place. Took a right when approaching the cliff and all the way to the end. We were parked right on the rim with stunning views. Twice had Big Horn Sheep come through the back of our site. Very quiet with great Verizon cell service. Camp here and you are only one mile from the entrance to Badlands NP.
I believe if you go to the left at the cliff the road goes on for a couple of miles. We saw a fair number of rigs parked all along the cliff for as far as we could see.
It did rain while we were here. This made the mud very slippery and sticky at the same time. It really sticks to the tires and your shoes if you are walking around. It does dry up pretty quick with one day of sun. If it has rained in the last 24 hours be careful not to get stuck on the way in.

We got a few hours of rain in the early AMs, and when we left around 11am the next day on a sunny day, our 30ft class C got stuck .5 mi by the entrance. 45 minutes later, another van coming in fell into to same predicament nearby. We paid $300 for a tow and the guy who bailed us out said that he was here one night from 6pm to 4am last week, pulling out a bunch of vehicles, including a Class A plus several cars.
The roads are super slick after the rain so plan your path before driving out!

About a mile away from the Pinnacles Entrance to Badlands National Park, this free camping spot was convenient and the views were amazing. You will be within feet of 90 ft cliffs (of course you can park further back!) to look at the incredible rock formations. We actually preferred this to the campground inside the park. Also, about 7 miles from the town of Wall, you’ll find everything you need there. Campfires are allowed. It can get very windy so be sure to check the forecast and park your rig at the best angle. After it rains, the roads can get muddy So be mindful of that as well. It drys up quickly so it’s more messy than worrisome of getting stuck. One of the best dispersed camping areas we’ve seen.

A week before we arrived the weather had been rainy and cold. I was concerned about the road but with only 1 rainless day before we arrived they were fine. The road going in is fine until you get to the V and then there are some ruts. They were nothing bad for our 33' gasser though so we turned left and parked along one of the cliffs. Gorgeous views but WIND!!! There were gusts up to 50 MPH which are a tad concerning when you listen to them and since they changed directions in the days we were there (SW to NE) we could not park to avoid them. But, would we have given up the view and the quiet and the proximity to the Pinnacles entrance? Heck no! While we were there we saw a large (maybe 36-38' 5th; an airstream-not small, 2 van campers, a bus and two brave (and crazy) souls who came and tried to set up a tent and spent the night in their car. If the road is fine just turn left at the fork and scout out a site-there is even one on the cliff that juts east.
As for the gate-we aren't sure what's going on with it. It was open and lying on the ground when we arrived and I tried putting it back up but it had no way to fasten it. Not really sure if it's been done away with or, because we saw no wildlife around on the east side of 240, the animals are being kept over on the west side.
Our site was a bit off level but nothing a few blocks couldn't fix and there were probably leveler sites further along. We did get a few sprinkles while there but it did not change the road surface at all.
Boosted we had 4 bars ATT.

Our very first time we ever boondocked and it was the most beautiful site we ever visited. Visited Sept 6-9 2018. Days warm but breeze made it comfortable. Nights perfect. Only one overlook in badlands park looked better than our campsite. Look forward to visiting again.

We stayed for two nights at he end of August. The weather was great and the views were breathtaking.
Thanks to other reviews we found the toad without any trouble. You have to remove and replace the barbed wire fence when entering. The road was decent for what it is. There were a couple spots where we kicked it into 4WD for better handling. The roads were dry when we were there, but you could see some deep ruts off the road from rainy days. There were a fair amount of of campers out, but there was plenty of space between each.
We found a site to the left of the cell towers on the rim that was fantastic. A herd of big horn sheep grazed just off the edge in the morning and evening.
It can get windy or there, so don’t leave your awning or chairs/rugs out unattended.

After reading previous reviews I stayed here for a weekend trip. As everyone else has said, the view is incredible, but I found the wind to so unbearable, I didn't want to spend any time outside more than I had to. It then poured all night, turning the road into a slippery mud pit. Unfortunately I am not full-timing anymore and had to leave Sunday due to work, so maybe my experience would have been better if I could have waited to leave once the roads dried out. I've never 'hydroplaned' on mud, or knew that was possible, but it led to jackknifing my camper. Luckily I was only going about 3-5mph, so the damage was minimal, but this road is NOT drive-able after that much rain. Combining that experience with the wind, I'm not sure I would want to camp here again. Might drive out to check out the view again if I'm in the area, though I don't think I'll be chancing that road again with my camper in tow.
