This was our first experience to a dispursed campground that we'd never been to before. We were concerned about the roads and so came visit without the trailer after a day of siteseeing the Bandlands to see how the roads were. They definately need to be respected as there are some rutts and hills, but nothing that cannot be traveled on slowely. This campground is fantastic. We arrived on Wednesday early and stayed through Friday morning. The sites are where ever you can level your rig along the rim. The beauty of the Badlands, the grasslands, and of course the unobstructed sky is spectacular. The wind was strong while we were there. We felt safe and everyone was very respectful of others around them, there were no loud parties or people parking on top of someone else. We will make this spot a recurring stop.

After coming in on the road I recommend turning left and going for a ways if you want to try and be further spaced apart. If you turn right, know that everyone packs in. It does seem as folks continue to respect the area…we’ve never found a bunch of trash and it’s pretty quiet because it’s so huge. Still one of our favorite spots, just expect to share it.

I stayed there on the night of July 9th, 2021. It’s a popular place, I saw a few young people come and make videos for some websites. There was a thunderstorm later and I was very afraid that my car could be blown off the cliff.

We made coffee and took a walk. We encountered goats in the badlands!
I later watched Nomadland and it was fun to see this special spot featured in the film, along with Wall Drug close by.

I asked him how much it was to dump and he said it cost the same- $10 plus tax. After filling, we drove about 6 miles down the road towards the Badlands NP Pinnacles entrance. There are no signs to tell you where to turn and there were a couple of dirt roads to turn into. We started seeing the RVs parked on top so we turned in where the two big antennas were. The road is bumpy so take your time. We found a spot to the right of the hill. Once it started getting dark, more and more campers showed up. We were practically tail to tail. The cool breeze was a relief from the humidity and the burning sun. It was not at all windy for us- around 6-8 mph winds. There was a full moon that night but we didn’t see it because of the wildfires smoke from the west. The rising sun was a sight to see! We are planning to come again next year but maybe in early June or September.

We arrived around 4-5 PM each day and there were always many spots still available. Clean, safe, and quiet at night. This location is basically Badlands so prepare for some heat, but it was in the 90s Fahrenheit and still not unbearable for us. Wind was not bad on any of the days we spent here and if anything helped to offset some of the heat. Putting the Campendium info into Apple Maps got us there perfectly. Not hard to find. You may have some service as this location is not far from Wall. I had weak T-Mobile service, but the other in my group had no T-Mobile service.

This was a great overnight stay. We had seen the Badlands before and stayed here on our way across South Dakota because it's beautiful and free. It was crowded but there was plenty of room along both sides of the road to stay. We did find an overlook sight, the breeze was light and we had a great night's sleep. It was surprisingly very quiet! Most sites are not level so come prepared. Many rigs were using lots of blocking to get level.
We had good cell service but we didn't work here so I didn't do any speed testing.
