This was our 1st experience at a State Park in Arizona. We are full timers. The view was spectacular and the facilities were well cared for. We loved how close the hiking trails were. The weekends were VERY busy. But we didn't mind, nor did the noise from people walking by bother us.
The best analogy of our experience at Lost Dutchman would be owning a home in Arizona with a HOA. From the second we arrived, we felt like we were being watched. The person who checked us in (who was very nice) handed us a brochure with campground info. Never did he inform us about the new generator rules. One morning, we were approached by a camp host about the new rules - generators were only allowed from 8-10am and 5-7pm. Anyone from Arizona knows you need AC during the hottest time of the day. We didn't argue and put it away. This was VERY disappointing since it was close to 90*, we travel with pets, and had no electric hookups. Had we known ahead of time, we wouldn't have stayed there. The website said generators were allowed from 8am - 9pm.
One morning our friends were doing a photoshoot nearby. They paid the park entrance fee, it was 630am. We were in the non-hookup area. There were at least 6 open campsites surrounding us. They were only stopping by to say hi, and leave by 8am. A Ranger came by and told them they had to move their truck to the "day camp" area. We tried to get them to allow them to keep their truck nextdoor since they would be leaving within the hour and no one was on that campsite. The Ranger wrote down their licence plate and told them they would have had to go park and then walk back - which was about a 30 min. walk. Our friends just ended up leaving after being there for a half hour and paying $7 to enter the park.
We travel with 2 cats and 2 dogs. My hubby went to the car to get his work computer and the dogs got out the front door and ran to the car. Of course, at the same time, a camp host was riding by on a golf cart, stopped, and told my husband to put them on a leash.
We are very laid back, flexible people. The Rangers and camp hosts are there to enforce rules and keep the peace. We get it and appreciate it. The way we felt at Lost Dutchman was nothing we had ever experienced on the road. We recommend this campground for anyone who likes being in an environment where rules are strictly enforced.

Each site is very well kept by volunteers/park workers/camp host (not sure exactly). They rake every spot after folks leave.
The hike in the park into Tonto National Forest is fabulous, but really crowded. The crowds would be the only downside.

Love this place. Have stayed several times, lots of room, beautiful views, nice dump station on sight with water. Cell both Verizon and ATT not great but worth it for the camping.

The location is convenient with some nice, but busy hikes nearby. Our loop had no washrooms, so a bit of a walk. Listening to generators in the morning and evening was not pleasant.
Overall, this campground is just ok.

My wife and I stayed here with Electric and 50Amp service, no Waste hookup but there is a common dump station.
The sites are clean and well kept. Raked between guests. Plenty of space between sites for good privacy. Showers were clean and water was hot. There are more camp hosts than I have ever seen in a campground. Each small loop had at least one or two hosts. So that my explain why it is so clean.
The view of Superstition Mountains are amazing. My wife and I hiked up Siphon Draw trail. We were not planning on going all the way to the top of Flatiron summit as time did not permit and we had heard that it turns into a boulder climb the last mile. I think I will go on my own later this week early in the AM. If you hike this trail, bring lots of water and prepare for more effort than you may have thought.
Early one evening we saw a rattler "Diamond Back" heading across the road into the camp sites. I told the host but of course it was gone by the time he got over there.
The mountains are positioned so that the setting sun casts it orange glow on the towering rocks. It is quite magnificent. Be ready with tripod and camera.
There is much to do in the surrounding area of Apache Junction. The wild west recreation of Goldfield mine across from the park is great for walking with an ice cream cone and the mine tour and train ride are worth the price.
Of note, there are Pack Rats in this area, and many campers will have a string of LED lights under their cars and trailers to try to detour the rodents from picking up shiny things like car keys, red wires from your electric system or other things that make their den complete. Look up desert pack rats if you don't what they are, strange creatures.
We loved our stay and actually extended it in favor of another spot we were going to stay after.

This was our first camping experience. We picked up our teardrop trailer in Mesa and camped for the night. This park spoiled us for future camp sites. We stayed on the last weekend in January and environment was perfect. We opted to stay in Mesa later than check out so we moved to the group campsite for $20 for the second day.

Lost Dutchman is one of those campgrounds where not all the sites are created equal. As a result, your experience will vary depending on which site you have. This was our second time staying here and the site we got this time around (#120) was amazing. Tucked into the corner of the dry camping loop we had an unobstructed view of the Superstition Mtns. and easy out-the-door access to all the trails. The only negative was without power hook-ups we had to listen to a cacophony of generators most days.

Really clean sites, felt safe and welcoming. Standard pricing for the area with Water and power hookups. We loved all the hikes, and the beauty of the Superstition Mountains outside our windows. Obviously a little noisy due to so many campers nearby. They have no generator hours after 8pm so that helps.

Nice park, I had a pull-thru which seemed to have enough vegetation that I had enough privacy. They put the water and electric on the picnic table side of the site but it was easy enough to hookup so that I could have my front door facing the mountains. During my stay it was a bit rainy so the mountains had clouds and fog which created a magical place.
It does get busy on the weekend with day use but overall very nice and quiet at night. Decent mountain bike trail and hiking trails outside your door. The showers are private but are unisex and it didn't seem like there were many of them (4 in my loop). As others have noted, if leaving on a Sunday, there is only a 2 hole dump station which will get backed up. Convenient to the everything on the east side of Phoenix.

I loved this place, but it had some drawbacks. The sites are relatively spread out and well-groomed. There's a mix of back-ins and pull-throughs. Campground hosts were prevalent. The Superstition Mountains make for a spectacular backdrop for the campgrounds when you're facing east. The western "backdrop" is mostly a view of the suburban sprawl of Phoenix and the light pollution associated therewith. Once upon a time I'm sure this State Park was out in the sticks, but over the years the eastern edge of the Phoenix metro area has crept pretty close. Still a very nice place to spend a night or two.
