We have stayed here in previous years and had wonderful experiences. The park scenery and trails are beautiful. BUT ... last night our bikes were stolen from our campsite around 2:00 am by a known repeat offender. Apparently the criminals come every 2-3 weeks and steal bikes (we were told this by the Sheriff and an employee). We reported the crime to the park rangers and they said the park gate & camera will be operational tonight ... the Sheriff told us the gate has never been operational and the criminals hit the park frequently. Our bikes were chained to a steel table and the criminals used chain clippers to slice the chain.
Also, the bathrooms are absolutely filthy. This is the 3rd state park we've visited on this trip and all of the other bathrooms have been fantastic (Catalina, Cattail Cove). We've also stayed at the Maricopa & Pima County parks where the bathrooms have been very good. Lost Dutchman shower stalls have mold, soap scum, doors that don't lock, and the bathroom stalls run short on toilet paper.
The Lost Dutchman park rangers have been argumentative and unhelpful. On the other hand, the maintenance crews and camp hosts are very nice and try to help. Overall, this is a lovely park but run extremely poorly. I hate to say we will not be returning.

We reserved our spot online, so check in was a breeze. Campsite was beautiful, had a great view of the Superstition Mountains. Bathroom was very clean, trails were marked well. We will be back!

Check in was smooth with well attended and super friendly staff. Our site was off the hook gorgeous, with a front row view of the Superstition Mountains. You get that when you book 1 year and 4 hours out as I did. Hook ups were great, just remember that there is no sewer hook up, but the dump station is close. Our site was spotless when we arrived and staff are cleaning any empty sites almost immediately. This is the way every campground should operate. Zero noise unless you count my wife calling local birds with her Merlin app! Phenomenal hiking from our front door, and the night skies were terrific. Cell service was always good, but there is no park WiFi available.

Still a beautiful and well appointed campground it’s far from what it was just 5 years ago. The surrounding housing developments now abut the park on at least 2 sides. We awoke the first morning to the sound of leaf blowers; our campsite (#27) is across from several new homes under construction so we just loved the sound of the concrete pump trucks all day. Wednesday and Thursday were busy helicopter days as the helipad was in use from 6:30am through the morning - not for search and rescue but from what I could tell drop people off to use the bathroom. This used to be a really nice park but it’s become a suburb of Apache Junction. The Mining Town just down the road operates all day so you get to hear all the shoot outs, train whistles and announcements during the day. Sunsets remain incredible and it’s at the foot of the Superstition Mountains. Campsites are nice but I see some reduction of services like no more firewood at camp host locations. Also - I was completely unable to get a refund for a cancelled site - I talked to the rangers on 3 separate occasions and each time they said they saw that something didn’t get done - but I have yet to receive a refund. Sorry Lost Dutchman - you’ve lost us as repeat customers. It’s been a nice run but it’s time to move on.

It was an easy drive in and the roads/loops in the park are well marked. Our site was super long and paved with a very nice pebble picnic table/fire pit area. There are numerous hiking/biking trails that were dog friendly and plenty to do in/around the area. We’d recommend a short drive out to Tortilla Flats. The facilities were clean and the limited windows to have to listen to generators was refreshing and kept the noise pollution down to four hours each day. The views from the park and along the trails were incredible! We did have a negative experience with one volunteer, which did make our stay a bit less enjoyable, but people come and go, so hopefully that won’t impact others’ stays. We’d absolutely spend more time there the next time our travels bring us through the Phoenix area.

Check in at 3pm on Friday was quick & easy. Could’ve done without the few loud partiers, screaming babies, bratty toddlers, and shouting kids lol.
Site 2 layout is really interesting. It’s a good-sized site, with long paved parking, fire pit / grill a good distance from parking, picnic table beyond that, a round sitting or tent area under the canopy of a tree, a small walking path to a saguaro, and good amount of empty space before the road. Amazing view of Superstition Mountains from all the areas. Was great to open my b-van sliding door in the morning to that view!
The real downside was the camp host space in that area had a lot of bright white & blue LED rope lights on all night plus super bright motion sensor LED floodlights mounted on pylons. Blindingly bright to the point it was difficult to see walking to restrooms. The rope lights caused a bright glow through my windows all night. Definitely ruined star viewing from camp.

Lost Dutchman is a beautiful campsite however the sites are a little closer than what we prefer. We were in site 98 which was right in front of the Superstitious Mountains with no obstructions. The site was a pull thru but was barely long enough for our Toyota Tundra max cab and 20-foot trailer. A picnic table, fire ring and a couple of camp chairs is about all that fits at this site. If you want your trailer door to be lined up with the table, it will require you to pull the trailer through and park your tow vehicle behind it. Firewood can be purchased for $8 cash from the ranger station and ice for $6. If you want to use the well-maintained bathrooms or showers don’t stay in the 75-104 loop since the bathrooms are almost a half mile away via a trail that I would not recommend without closed toe shoes. We saw Quail and tarantulas on the trail. Although there were multiple signs to beware of rattle snakes we did not run into any. There was also a dog park near the main restrooms and showers. There is a dump station on your way out of the park that was easy to access. Goldfield Ghost Town just down the road, although a tourist trap it is a must see. There are multiple gift stores, a restaurant as well as a hamburger/ice cream stand and bakery, a train ride and Mine tours. Just a little farther down the road is the Superstition Mountain Lost Dutchman Museum which is more than just a museum full of old artifacts. There is a great gift shop and 15 acres of mining artifacts, artwork and a movie site Chaple used in a 1968 western called Charro which started Elvis Presley as well as the Apacheland Movie Barn used in multiple westerns. They even have a working 1914 Stamp ore mill which was used to crush boulders that had small pieces of gold within them. When enjoyed our two-night stay at Lost Dutch and spending the day learning about the history of this little community.

Great AZ State Park at Base of Superstition Mountain... very clean and well maintained. Convenient shopping in Apache Junction and Mesa not to far away. As with all desert parks, watch for wildlife. We encountered a rattle snake on pavement while walking our dog. He backed up and so did we. Next morning early, some coyotes walked through our site. Some of the sites are a little weird in layout but workable. Careful with a larger rig when selecting a pull through. Even though the site length may be listed as relatively long, the arcs of the pull throughs are tight and reduce the useable length. Google Satellite View is your friend.
