This has been a wonderful campsite! I had no idea the Kowechobe camp was so close! I was worried about bugs, but late January 2022 there hasn't been any issues. I have sat outside for 4-6 hours a day and it has been so relaxing! I am a mosquito magnet and only have 2 bites without using spray or candles. Wish I could stay in this spot another 7 days, but it's reserved, so I'll move to Kowechobee. My short, 10' high, signal booster took the signal from 1 bar to 4! A neighbor borrowed the use of my booster pad to make a call to Canada when her phone couldn't get a signal. Toilet was cleaned out on Monday and the smell of the cleaning fluid was overpowering in site 11, but once it dried there were no bad smells. I did hear "bathroom sounds" when sitting outside though. By parking the way I did, I got shade for most of the afternoon from my vehicle and folks could still use the other side of my rig to access the bathroom. Note there is no host or ranger on site at either location or at the check in station, but they do drive through. There is water at the hunter check in station, but it is next to the game cleaning station, so that hose has likely been in more than one carcass and the end was laying in the mud next to feathers and bird body parts. I had enough water to last all week, but did use the hose to spray down my dog on a hot day. There is a 14.5 mile loop road through the WMA that I plan to check out when I switch camps (or maybe tomorrow when it's cold). LOTS of different kinds of birds in the area (osprey, wood storks, herons, etc.) if you walk down the road to the hunter check in station. Also lots of cows, but they are skittish of people. I saw a med size gator sunning herself on the bank of the roadside water about a half mile down the road (after the hunter check in station).

I had a great time at this free primitive campground. It was my first trip out van camping on public land and I was really excited after easily reserving a campsite online. I wasn't completely sure what to expect but i found it to be a good enough place to spend a week reconnecting to myself and mother nature.
My camp spot was very spacious and could easily fit two vehicles and a tent. But the spaces next to me were much smaller. I saw a few rvs at some of the larger sites. All the sites were well shaded by oak trees, palms, and spanish moss. Had to move my solar generator into the field to get uninterrupted sun. There is a vault toilet available.
Expect it to get muddy if there's any rain. The mosquitos forced me into my van at about 6-6:30 pm or so and it got completely dark shortly after. I really enjoyed hearing the owls at night.
My only complaint is regarding a couple of the patrons, one camper did not follow the rules of "Quiet Time" (from 10pm - 4am) and kept they're rv generator running way into the night on several nights. And I witnessed some other campers chopping wood from living trees for firewood (which is illegal).
Other than that, great spot to camp for up to 14 days. Can't wait to come back to explore more of the area!

As the weather got hotter, the bugs got worse. Pit toilet that wasn’t bad. Not having a table at the site was a minus. After a heavy rain it can be fairly muddy. If you... more

If you run out of water, there is a faucet at the nearby hunter checkin. It’s in the middle of nowhere but there is a tiny Mexican restaurant/convenience store a few miles south. Reservations must be made online but ours was never checked. There were always empty sites.

Sites are completely shaded and there are lots of bugs, even in late October. On a clear night, take a walk out of the trees and check out the stars.

(There was a guy in tbe AODA site who was not disabled). Wouldn't have been horrible except for the several homeless people squatting there. With dogs. Partying. Fighting. Smoking cigarettes (ya...homeless...*wink*), peeing in jugs & throwing it into the camp. There is no regulation here. Also...no camp maps so nowhere to even hike. No fishing .

Lots of birds and cattle but not much else. Verizon Service was okay, good enough to use internet but not great. iHeart radio streamed with a few hiccups but not bad. We will store this place under favorites for a return visit.
