Beautiful place but all site are reservations only. No drop in sites. There is no cell service although you can get WiFi outside the visitor center in the campground and make reservations. Fortunately for us there was 1 site available. Other than that is was beautiful.

Plenty of shade and great scenery. Two hiking trails, the longer one is a narrow, rocky path up 400 feet to the top of the canyon and can be a bit treacherous - it really requires a hiking stick. The views from the trail as you ascend are fantastic. Up near the top of the canyon is the only place you'll get Verizon service. It was about 8 Mbps down, 1 up, but ONLY at the top of the canyon. In the park itself, you get nothing even with a booster. AT&T is generally usable inside the park but not great - 3 down, and a paltry 0.08 up with a booster. There are several restrooms, but only one with a shower, and it's a single shower (in the men's room anyhow). Overall, very quiet and peaceful. The sites aren't real far apart from each other, but everyone seems respectful of other campers.
Verizon non-existent.
AT&T okay.

They do have both electric and water hook ups, but on specific sites. The Campendium says there is a cell signal. It is only one bar. Sometimes you get a signal and sometimes you don’t. But it is quite pleasant and I would stay here again.

I'd like to share some information that may not have been mentioned before about this park—it actually has two campgrounds to choose from. One is on the ground level, the MAIN campground with reservable sites by the river. The other one is located on top of the hill called EL CERRO CAMPGROUND, which you can reach by turning left on the road just after the office building. This one is probably newer. While there aren't any hookup sites available up there, you'll find a more open sky and a peaceful atmosphere. I personally had great AT&T reception on the hill, which I didn't have on the ground level, and I was able to set up my Starlink with a clear sky. The cost was $10/night for these dry sites.
The campground on the hill tends to be particularly enjoyable in the spring and fall because there are no hookups, but if you're prepared to handle a few hours of hot temperatures during the day, it can still be a viable option in the summer. It's worth noting that these sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis, as they didn't mention "reservation sites" like the sites on the ground level. Surprisingly, during my visit, I noticed many vacant spaces, all of which were quite nice. Starlink was easy to set up with no obstructions here.
When I visited the park in June, during the summer, it was indeed quite hot during the day. However, the temperatures cooled down to the comfortable 60s at night.
On the entrance level of the park, you'll encounter a greater number of trees and a more wooded setting and the river. The "reservation sites" are all here, and you can call or make reservations online many of which offer water and electric hookups. Unfortunately, I had no reception in this area, and the presence of trees hindered the use of Starlink so you better make those reservations before arriving to the park. There is a dump site and water available if needed.
The surroundings were stunning, with a couple of trails to explore, and in very hot days you can enjoy swimming in the river. It truly is a beautiful area.

Restrooms and free hot showers were located in the center of the campground. A pedestrian bridge is located near the restrooms that connects to the trails along the Pecos River. We had 4-bars of Verizon service at the visitors center during the daytime hours ONLY, all other times there was no cell service. The campground has a dump station near the visitors center. The visitors center was not open during our visit.

Access road reasonably good; the road from the south to Villanueva has significant sharp curves, drops, and declines, more difficult for larger rigs and trailers. Sites are graveled and level, good bathrooms, a functioning dump station, and nice playground for kids. We were in the last site with no neighbors (25); non-electric sites seemed nicer and more spread out than electric sites. Several short trails available for easy/moderate hiking. No cell service.

Nice state park at the end of the road. Great vista hike in the campground. Fort Union National Monument and Pecos National Historical Site accessible from here. Dump station closed with no indication as to how long. Camp staff was no help for alternatives. No cell coverage.

Camped 10/24/21-10/25/21 (Sun & Mon nights). By reserving online, it actually cost $18 a night ($14 + $4 reservation fee a night). Campground was busy, so we were glad to have reserved a good site not far from the entrance. We didn't notice a lot of locals using the park or noise, but the day use area is at the end where there is a loop to turn around. Trees had golden yellow leaves, so our first impression arriving was Wow! The campground is down in a valley, with steep rock cliffs along the river.
We liked the shelters over the picnic table, although not all sites had them. Dump station is located in the middle of the campground. We only had 1 bar at our site, but at the Visitor Center, we got 3 bars (cell booster there).
Clean bathrooms, large handicapped shower stall with seat. Shower was nice - good water stream and hot. It's the kind where you have to keep pushing a button though.
There's another campground area (El Cerro) up a hill after the dump station - they are non-electric sites with VTs. Awesome views of the cliffs up there, but windier.

We stayed for three days at Villanueva State Park in December. There were very few other people camping and hence it was quiet and we were able to enjoy the beautiful canyon. There are a couple of nice hiking trails around which our dogs loved.
Unfortunately, we did not have any cell service with Verizon. The other thing that was a bit of a bummer: the state park will be closed off around 7pm and you will not be able the enter it with a vehicle past that time. We came back from a dinner later than 7pm, so we had to leave our car outside the park and walk to our campsite.
Overall, we really enjoyed our time at Villanueva and would come back here.
