“There are easier free campsites”

Tigiwon Road (FR 707) comes off US 24 just south of Minturn, winds past a mine, then heads up into the mountains. There's a USFS campground (Halfmoon) at the top of the road, 8 miles up, but before you get there you'll find a dozen or so dispersed sites.
However, 707 is one lane wide, quite rough, and remarkably heavily trafficked. Some of the switchbacks are pretty steep, and would be a challenge for any but the smallest RVs. And the traffic means you'll be trying to pass oncoming vehicles on a narrow ledge where there isn't really enough room for two cars, let alone when one vehicle is an 8' wide RV. It's a challenge.
And the campsites aren't really worth it, frankly. They're mostly small, unlevel, and deep in the trees. [If I'm going to camp in the mountains, I want to be able to SEE the mountains.] They're not even that quiet - as I said, there's a surprising amount of traffic on this dead-end road, day AND night.
If you have a small rig, and you're hard-up for free camping, go ahead and give Tigiwon a shot. Otherwise, you're probably better off going elsewhere.

“Terrible road, gate closed, barely able to turn around”

The road off the 24 is absolutely terrible. Large and deep potholes. We drove about a half mile and the road became very narrow. A car coming towards us said that the gate was closed and no one could get in and we would not be able to turn around at the gate. We had to back up a quarter mile and was barely able to turn around. I guess advice is to call the ranger station ahead of time, but even still I wouldn't go back on that road with my 31' fifth wheel.
