Great little free camp spot. Beautiful hiking trail next to the river. Amazing views of the canyon. Not big camp sites. Good for tents, vans, and truck campers. Normal washboard dirt road for 1 mile.

This was a lovely place to stay right near Smith Rock State Park. The area was totally quiet with a few other car campers in pull-offs. We got there after dark but in the morning were pleasantly surprised with a stroll over to a massive canyon and flowing river.

We’ve stayed here a couple of times, it’s a great stop when traveling from Portland to/from Bend. Super quiet, amazing fresh ponderosa pine desert smells! Very dusty & dry. We get 2 bars of Verizon.

Would NOT bring a trailer or motorhome, this is set up for tents only. Other than a long hike down a 300 side of a cliff, there is NOTHING else to do here. It is basically a lava field...not much plant growth or anything but dirt and rocks to look at. Not for the lazy hiker. Very very very washboard and dusty gravel road for last 1/... more

Not for the lazy hiker.
Very very very washboard and dusty gravel road for last 1/2 mile.
Lots of dust in camping area.
Just not worth it for even free for how far out of the way it is and how far you have to hike through a lava field to see some water.
No cell service, no digital tv

You could get a small trailer here, most people here had tents or class B's. Larger trailers won't be able to make the right turn around at the end of the road. We left our 17 ft Bigfoot at home, and slept in our van. We got here on a Sunday and scored the huge site at the end for our van and screen shelter. Locals told us a group of 30 were in our site the previous night
I was able to meditate on the edge of the canyon, shaded by large junipers, with a soft breeze, with the Deschutes River rapids below... amazing
Vault toilet at the trailhead, no water, no trash service, no fires, no picnic tables.
cc and canine would stay here again
