We arrived around 4pm on Friday and there were plenty of spots available. The road gets rough the farther you go so I would recommend vehicles with 4WD. Great access to the creek and the lake nearby has breathtaking views!

road into site is full of potholes. I was able to get through pretty easily with my VW Alltrack going slow and avoiding pot holes. Very quiet spot right by the river. Plenty of spots for other campers. there was only one other camper while I was there.

Easy drive up from Buena Vista, there's two one lane bridges that can be tricky for bigger rigs. There's a pay campground right by the lake with electric and facilities. Also by the lake are 2 dark, scary, and smelly public vault toilets. Keep going up the mountain past the privately owned cabins and campsites start to pop up on both sides of the road. Generally the sites on the creek side are more suited for rv's and the mountain side more suited for tents. We came in midweek and got a prime spot right next to the creek and tucked into an Aspen grove. Another couple joined us for one night but our fire rings were so far apart we had no privacy concerns and the roaring creek drowned out any noise. We really loved this spot and stayed an extra night because I couldn't bear to leave. There is a short section of the road at the bottom that is heavily pot-holed and tough to get through with a trailer but smooth sailing afterward. We didn't know we would not have cell service at all so be sure to give your family a call before you head up the mountain so they know where you're at.

We came up looking to camp in late April. It was absolutely gorgeous the day we got there. Since it was so early in the season there was no one around. We explored the lake area up the road which was very tranquil and beautiful. That night, however, a snow storm came in and we woke up buried in 2 feet of snow. We decided to pack up and leave only because our car at the time would not get out if we stayed in longer. I absolutely loved the location right along the creek, though and we are definitely looking at going back soon!!!
