It was quiet and well maintained. Full disclosure: the campground hosts are neighbors. They were cleaning toilets, raking campsites, and helping people park, plan and have fun. The lake is walking distance and allows nonmotorized boating and fishing and there were always plenty of people parked along the shore. VERY intermittent cell messaging; we’d be sitting around and suddenly we’d get 4 or 5 messages. We found that unplugging was a nice change, but Buena Vista, with nice restaurants and shops and cell signal, wasn’t too far. The road in is rough; take it slow and you’ll be okay.

When we found this campground we found a Little Piece of Heaven!!! The camp hosts (Deborah & Michael, I believe) were absolutely amazing!! They are the hardest working camp hosts we've ever come across....No exaggeration. As soon as campers left....They were right on it. They not only cleaned up the site but also raked the ENTIRE site area. The two of them were always working and riding through the campground. Deborah suggested we take site #23, said it was one of their best sites, and BOY she wasn't wrong!! The sunrises were amazing and we had deer right up at our fire ring most every night. We also saw a moose while walking on a trail that was right out of our campsite. Then when it was time to leave (we left at 2am) we were escorted out by a Very Large male elk!!! Not wanting to spook him and have him damage our trailer, we slowly followed him for 20mins. hahahaha Oh well, who doesn't like wildlife.
I will say the road in is BUMPY and DIRTY but well worth it!!
We were there from June 2-13, 2024

That said, everything else was wonderful! Yes, it’s 3 miles down a paved (washboard) dirt road. Slow down and enjoy it! Also, the campground host (Steve?) was very friendly and particularly helpful in answering my million questions. He even offered advice on future destinations for my journey (which I needed!)
I would definitely return and hit up Cottonwood Hot Springs again while I’m at it!

We had a great site with a view of the lake. The road in about 3 miles was washboard and dusty. We rode our mountain bikes out the road in the opposite direction 5 miles. The road gets rougher and is uphill but a good workout. There are many 4 wheelers and jeeps on the road. There is also a trailhead out that way Green Timber gulch which climbs and meets another trail. Past the campground are numerous free Boondocking site many taken even during the week. We arrived on a Wednesday and the campground filled quickly. It was full Friday and Saturday nites. Water centrally located and out houses that were clean. We hit the peak of the aspens changing colors and it was spectacular.

Not much shade, a little expensive, but well maintained. Close to the lake, dirt road into the area was washboarded.
