It was beautiful but it also attracts off-road motorized vehicle users. From what I could see it was mostly larger RVs hauling toy trailers. Had there been a nightly rate I would have stayed but instead drove east another 30 minutes or so to the SR722 pull out and that was free, quiet, and I’d stay there again.

Weekday in October there were about a dozen ORV rigs and 3 dozen dune buggies zipping around the trails and mountain. We camped just inside the gate and far away from the action. Entertaining but noisy. Expect loud fireworks after dark. Glad the dogs were put up. Garbage collection and pit toilets. Fire rings. There is an environmental and historical information kiosk at the upper end of the camp.

Stayed here for the night just to rest up on our way home. This place is off highway 50, about 20 miles to west of Falon. The sign reads free Tuesday and Wednesday. So we stayed for free. This review is correct. We went off the first persons review about staying at the Pony Express information kiosk. There is no camping allowed at the kiosk. We pulled in at dusk and had no other option but to stay at Sand Mountain which was fine since we wanted to explore the dunes. However, one night of camping cost us $40. You can only pay for a week pass or annual pass. We sucked it up and pages up.
We are duners and are used to the noise and dust these places bring. As a sand enthusiast the dunes looked small but after exploring there is quite a large area with many trails into the mountains. Plenty of trash cans and nice vault toilets.

Camped at pony express station exhibit.
There was noise during day in distance of sand dune vehicles but we didn't camp there. Try the pony express. Off the NV 50 south east of fallon. BLM land
