That said, we got to see so much more of the Grand Canyon by camping here than we would have outside the park (although it looked like there were some good boondocking spots in the Kaibab Forest). Dry camping but enough filtered light for solar, sites not super close, pavement was pretty cracked and messy in places but we have a short popup so it didn't matter much.
We have two young boys (7 and 6) and went about a mile and a half down both South Kaibab and Bright Angel and it was really cool and doable - heed ALL the warnings about water, fitness, ability, hiking in the morning, and not going rim to river to rim unless you have been training hard for it. Saw some pretty sick people not doing well at all on the upper parts of the trail.

Great location with fair amenities. We had a true 30’ Class A with small tow. I would not recommend anything much larger lest you find yourself unable to fit in a spot or maneuver turns. The park is rated for 30’ or less so beware.
We were on the Aspen Loop in Spot 11 for one night which was very tight & somewhat precarious. Spot 34 (two nights) was much more ample, but is directly adjacent (like 20’-30’) from the blockhouse restroom so we opted for our patio to face the road. Not the best layout, but we made do. One bar of cell coverage at Spot 11 and No coverage at Spot 34. That with a cell phone booster so just assume you will not get anything.
Restrooms were clean. No showers. Showers near registration shack, but were closed for the “season.” If the campground is open, FYI, it’s the “season” and should be open. My 11 yr old did not enjoy watching a tenter giving himself a full-body wipey shower across the way.
Dump station is not up to par. Dual entry/lanes with shared island, but only one sewer drain and it gets super busy. Why not two to expedite dumps? Also, there was no flush or filling hose/spigot on the island. Two spigots near outer lane which will require a 25-50’ hose depending on lane & fill location on rig. Again, slowing down the dump & fill process. Dropped a star for this.
Overall, can’t beat being centrally located. Market Plaza nearby along with many trails (paved & dirt) for biking & walking. If you can get a reservation, best place to stay.

Our campsite (210 in Oak Loop) was not very level and therefore tough for our 20ft camper. We saw lots of campsites that were more level and would’ve been better options.
The campground itself was spacious as sites were not on top of one another. There was lots of wildlife present as well.
Additionally, we had absolutely no service on our AT&T phone. We had better service inside the Grand Canyon itself than at our campground. Verizon service was okay and usable.

If you can, dry camp in Mather... it’s totally worth it. We lucked out...The place was empty.
We checked out near by Trailer village & it was packed full ... so clearly I’ll take privacy over convenience any day ... The wildlife that came thru out spot was amazing.

The campsites feel private and are in a natural pine grove of trees. Camping in October, I was happy for a site that got sun. You will hear road noise from all the tourists driving around, which made my rating lose one star. The hikes around the Grand Canyon are really wonderful and worth your time. The campsite has washers, dryers, and showers. It's a great deal at $18.

We were only able to run our generator from 7am to 9 am and 6pm to 8pm. The shower house was $2.50 per shower for 5 mins. The water pressure was horrible. The laundry was located in the shower house and they were brand new washer and dryers. They ranged in cost, but for a standard load it was $1.50 per machine. It I had to chose I would pick another camp ground, but it was a place to park. It was located in the heart of the Grand Canyon National Forest. The sites were paved. Cell service was non existent in the national park and camp site.

A campsite that offers everything you need. For those who have not booked 6 months in advance: Save yourself the stress of searching for a campground with available Spaces. Sharing a space is not allowed and will be checked. Drive to the nearby National Forest Campground. This one really great and you will always find a nice place.

This was our second time at Mather. We left the Airstream at home and tent camped with my son's scout troop. Though this campground has so many sites, there are plenty of trees all around so you don't feel like you have no privacy, and the sites aren't right on top of each other. This site felt spacious and had a great spot for the tent. The back-in driveway was at the wrong angle, though. Actually, many of the driveways are not back-in friendly around the one-way loops. We just pulled the car in forward because we weren't planning to be in the site much over the weekend, but it would have been more convenient for loading and unloading to be able to back in. But that's a trivial complaint for being in the park and close to shuttle stops, etc.
The noise is pretty noticeable early in the morning. You can definitely hear people getting ready to hike early. We were those people on Saturday, but we heard those getting ready at 4 am and driving away at 4:45 to catch the hiker shuttle.
Those who occupied our site before us left a trace. But people who leave corn cobs go everywhere, so it's not this campground's fault. It's disappointing to see but good teachable moments for the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts.
Coin-operated showers were a game changer after a long, tough hike. Hot water running for for plenty of time for $2. Fabulous! There's a laundromat in that building, too, if needed.
No cell coverage for us all weekend unless we were right in the heart of Grand Canyon Village.

It was a challenging squeeze for us to pull through our site with our 22' trailer but so worth it. Be sure and research your intended site to make sure it is doable. There are no hook ups, but there are showers and restrooms. And there is a dump station at the entrance.
The park is showing a need for maintenance on some of the asphalt pads, however, we had a great location with nobody behind us except the wandering elk each morning and evening.
We ran our generator a few hours one evening to "catch up".
This campground is very close to the grocery store which also was a very pleasant surprise as well. My husband purchased a "Centennial" hat for the Grand Canyon.
One day, we headed east in our truck for those viewpoints and the next day we parked by El Tovar Lodge and took the shuttles for the west viewpoints.
