I only noticed the lake smelling occasionally, but judging by all the warning signs and a couple articles I read about the lake, it must be pretty nasty.
Great location if you’re visiting White Sands, and Alamogordo it’s just up the road with lots of resources.

Everyone said this was closed but when I came by the gate was open so I went in. The area has plenty of signs warning about not getting near the water. The drive in was easy and there was plenty of room to camp.

Been here before 2018 and trying to camp here again.
Sign said closed, gate was locked.
At White Sands visitor center they said might be due to pollution.
Walmart Alamogordo might be your best option.

Super easy to get to and plenty of open space, read a lot about the lake having a weird smell and say the signs forbidding swimming so I looked into it though and I would stress that if you have pets or children to keep them away from the water at all times as it is heavily contaminated with hazardous chemicals.

We stayed here back in April. The site is easy to access and a great spot to make as a home base for exploring White Sands National Monument or just enjoying the serenity of this lake and bird haven. The only downside to staying here for us was the minor road noise and the extreme winds and subsequent dust.

I have not camped here, but I have some information that may be of use to Campendium readers. While Campendium shows the Lake Holloman Recreation Area as BLM land (in part because the area is indicated so on BLM maps), you’ll see a sign at the entrance gate off of US-70 saying, “No off road use of any vehicle by order of the installation commander”, of course referring to the commander of Holloman AFB. According to the Holloman AFB security office, the area is located within Holloman Air Force Base where "concurrent jurisdiction" applies, meaning that the Holloman security forces, county sheriff, and BLM rangers jointly patrol and have jurisdiction over the area. So, if you need law enforcement help, you can call any of the three agencies. Alternatively, if you or yours misbehaves, you can be busted by any of the three. Just sayin...

The gate was tight, but completely manageable. There are some large dips in the road in a few areas, just be mindful. They are easy to avoid as long as you are paying attention. Plenty of room to turn around.
In the second week of May, I didn't smell anything unless standing very near to the lake. You wouldn't want to get too close anyway. I believe it is extremely contaminated (just don't get in it or drink it and you'll be fine).
The access to White Sands National Monument was the reason why we stopped. It did not disappoint. No one else here and it is in a very beautiful location.
