I enjoy photographing beautiful areas, and it's always great not to have to drive a long distance before dawn to get to your objective. At only 3.6 miles from the dunes Visitor Center to the entrance to the camping area, this is perfect for exploring the Monument.
And now for the smell report: if you've read several reviews about this site you know that several people have detected a distinct odor emanating from the lake. My report in the third week of April, 2019: no smell! it may depend on the season or the amount or direction of wind, but it was fairly breezy when I was here, and I walked up and down the area for a good distance, and my sniffer detected no problem.
Here are the coordinates to the turn in off Highway 70:
32.803913, -106.122912
I had to swing wide to get through the narrow gate with my long rig and car, but I did not have to negotiate a u-turn down the road in order to have a better angle for entering. It may be tight with a longer rig if you're heading southwest on Highway 70 toward Las Cruces, New Mexico. Heading toward Alamogordo on 70, it was no problem.
Coming from Las Cruces, look for a tall Cemex sign. (See photo) The next road on the North is the entrance gate.
I arrived in the late afternoon on a Sunday, and several of the places were already occupied, but I was able to park my 35' rig parallel to the lake with no problem (after disengaging my car). There were no issues with noise or rowdy behavior. Everything was quiet and peaceful. An excellent experience!

You cannot beat this location for price (free) and proximity to White Sands National Monument! This location is on Holloman Airforce Base, they allow public access which is awesome! We loved the daily airshow, the military does flyovers all day long...if you have noise sensitive kids or dogs or any type of wartime PTSD this is something to consider because they are loud and rumble the RV but we loved it.
Here's the thing...the lake is a pretty backdrop but it is stinky, almost unbearably so at times. I think we got the brunt of it because of where we chose to set up...we went all the way around to where the lake water line ends...the wi d blew directly at us from the lake, I think other spots closer to the entrance did not have the same issue and if we went back we would probably take that into consideration but our spot was super private.

We pulled in here late at night using Google directions (both not recommended by other reviewers) and didn’t have any issues! The site is slightly further down the road than google tells you but the camping sign and turn off were visible from where it brought us. Also the cattle gate wasn’t an issue for our 26’ Jayco Feather trailer but I could see it being tight for other larger campers and trailers.
There is a very, very light smell off the pond when the wind blows but honestly nothing to be offended about and we can’t smell it at all in our camper even with the windows open.
There were several other trailers here and we still found a spot no issue, not “by the water” directly it on the other side of the dirt road but perfectly flat when we pulled in and at a late hour I’ll definitely take it!

Only complaint is the famous cattle guard :( Definitely do not arrive after dark (this pretty much goes without saying at every boondocking spot)! Once past that gate its smooth sailing!

One of the best well maintained BLM land. The entry is a bit tricky but it’s easy after you get the hang of it.
This place is regularly patrolled by multiple law enforcement agencies and it was a blast talking to them and feeling safe.
Jets fly over frequently and that was the best part of this site.

There’s several spots right on the edge of the lake and the area was relatively clean. For those of you with base access, Holloman AFB is very close, but be warned that their main gate is really narrow, and has some extra-obnoxious obstacles. I’d recommend using the commercial traffic gate to get in.

Camp spots were clean and seemed to all have fire rings, though we didn't have a fire there seemed to be no restrictions against it. Sites are right on the little lake. Other campers (current and past) all seemed to leave no trash so the area was spotless in that regard. It's FREE. It is located about 2 miles north (toward Alamogordo) of the White Sands Visitors Center. And, oh by the way, it's FREE! Alamogordo is a nice little town a few miles north of the lake and has some attractions like the Space Museum and even a little zoo. BTW, there is a free RV dump site at the Visitors Center and zoo.Did I mention IT'S FREE. Please respect the fact that the USAF allows us to use the site and ENJOY !!!

What we got was a bonus as our spot was right on the lake and we had good Verizon cell service to boot. We didn’t experience any bad smells from the lake/pond when we were there (March 2018) and I have an overly sensitive nose. There are loud jets flying overhead during the day, but we thought that was pretty cool! Don’t worry they don’t fly at night so it won’t affect your sleep. If you are lucky you’ll get to experience a beautiful sunset reflected on the lake. Would stay there again!

The military jets are flying overhead during the day, which we enjoyed, but they are a bit loud. White Sands was just a few minutes up the road making this a perfect spot for us! We would definitely stay here again.

Ugly sites, highway & air traffic noise, the lake smells and the water looks putrid (no swimming posted). The vistas were nice. The place was packed by 7pm on a Wednesday. Tolerable for one night though we wouldn't consider it again.
