It’s not as cute as the National forest, but it is close and free. Next time we will skip the search and go straight here.
It was our first time camping on BLM land, so seemed super random to just roll into a flat unmanaged space and set up camp. But it worked for us!

The internet is superb. This location is so close to the park you could spit on it. There’s a natural foods grocery with an amazing selection, farm fresh eggs and produce (the kind of eggs with the dark yellow yolk and no male baby chicks had to die today for them). Anyhow, basically vegetarian paradise. My dog roamed free which she loves. This place is HUGE so you’ll be no where near your neighbors. Sadly it’s also for sale so it might not be around for long.
Bring your bike for hours of riding around the dry lake bed. I didn’t see any trash near me but there were trashier spots.

Most people know of this BLM but it’s a great close spot to Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley. The roads were easy to navigate even with our 32’. There’s plenty of space for hundreds of RV’s out there and it was very quiet while we were there. The only reason I didn’t give it to 5 stars is to the amount of trash. There were boxes, blankets, shoes, clothes, leftover food, and even car parts. It was quite sad to see how much trash was left from people.
Regardless, it’s a good boondocking spot and very convenient!

Solar is plentiful as there is no (and I mean, no) vegetation except knee-high bushes. Expect those bushes to be covered in toilet paper, and be wary when walking around camp or letting your dogs roam as human feces abounds.
Apart from questioning the humanity of someone who would poop on the ground and leave it, I found Joshua Tree North to be acceptable for short visit. There is great cell service for working, which you will not find in the park.

I stayed one night. It was quiet, but it was very convenient to amenities in Yucca Valley and to the Joshua Tree entrances.
The road was a little tricky to navigate, but my 23' Class C made it! The worst was the end of the pavement meeting the sand road with a big pot-hole. Plenty of room, so not overly crowded. Plenty of people recreating during the day, including shots being fired in the far distance and bikers, but all quieted down right after sundown.
Great night's sleep here! Enough people around for a solo traveler to feel comfortable yet not crowded.

That all said, I would NOT stay here if there is any threat of rain. It's a flat flat flat dry dusty plain, and the dried cracked mud looks like it would be very silty when wet. I'd fear for flash floods. And yeah, like the other reviewers said, random locals do occasionally come and shoot guns, drive ATVs/motorcycles and etc.
Also the sun/heat woke me up by 6:30 every morning but hey that's to be expected. It was too windy at night to sleep under the Milky Way like I tried to.

I stayed here for a night in late February waiting for my campsite at Black Rock Campground. Careful if it's been really rainy. I was there on President's Day and there were lots of local camping and playing but there was plenty of room for everyone.

We have been staying at Joshua Tree South BLM and decided to check the north section out. Maybe because of all the recent rains, it looked like you could easily get stuck out there. I would not camp there for fear of getting stuck. Not very inviting at all in my opinion. This was early February 2017.

Meh. It's free, yes. It's not the least bit picturesque or welcoming. I stayed here off of Sunflower road, took the first left by the power pole and the roads were so uninviting and it was not easy to know if you would be able to get through or not for all the potholes, so I pulled off almost right under a sometimes noisy power line. No trees, very dusty and then you have the locals coming in to go four wheeling or to ride their motorcycles. So it wasn't very pleasant here. It's HUGE. It's free. I don't recall having trouble with internet but don't vouch for me on that. I have Verizon.
I wish I had stayed at the south BLM area instead but I thought it would be faster to get to many of the trails if I was at the north BLM spot so I moved. In reality, it took almost as long because the drive to get into the park was maybe 20 minutes?
At least here you are closer to gas stations, etc compared to the south area. I got water and dumped at the southernmost campground in the park.
I would not stay here again, I would stay at the south campground next time, unless for some reason I needed to be closer to 'town'.
Oh, yes, and there was a lot of trash around. Really, people?
