Yampa River State Park is nice. It's only drawback is it is close to Hwy. 40 and the traffic noise is pretty continuous. So, I can only recommend it as a good place for a single overnight stay. Otherwise it's a pretty park and is a good base since it is close to the towns of Hayden and Craig. We were here mid-August and as others report, there are mosquitoes and flies, but it wasn't unbearable. The flies were actually more of a nuisance. Good cell phone reception, better than expected. Water is good tasting. Staff is friendly.

The campground has pay showers & laundry, which is a bonus as we full-time.
It is about 30 minutes from Steamboat Springs.

The cons to this campground is that it is just off the highway and the noise is loud. That is why I gave the lower scores for noise and location.
Be prepared to pay $30+ for each night.
There is also a $9 day use fee for each day you are there.

The rates have gone up quite a bit. $34/nt for just electric (water is shared between several sites) AND $8 day use fee. So- $40. Nice campground, but that is pricey for a state park. Apparently, you must reserve on line in advance- no walk-ins.

Well cared for campground that was very clean. It has a nice laundry and hiking trails. We were there for 1 night to recharge dump and do laundry. Didn't have time to explore the park. Road noise was the only problem. Not positive on the price. It is now Yampa River State Park.

It's difficult reviewing this as "wouldn't return" because the reasons are not anything that can improved or fixed. It's highway noise. For us, it's a deal-breaker. We knew the park was on Hwy 40 but just didn't consider how close and how loud it would be. The campground is relatively small, so I don't feel that location within the park would change the road noise much. Even when the weather cooled enough to open the windows, we left the air on just because of the noise.
With that being said, the rest of our visit was very good. The camp hosts were very friendly. The Visitor Center and Restrooms/Showers were new and clean. The Park Rangers seemed to go through the park quite often and were working hard to keep trees watered and growing for more shade. The campsites were nicely spaced and we never felt we were too close to anyone. The nearby town of Hayden is very cute and we loved the pizza restaurant in town. All the "locals" were extremely nice! The grocery store in Hayden is also great...even great produce and meat which is rare in such a small town.
We also very much enjoyed the mile gravel path that circles the campground. We walked our dogs on that path several times a day and rode our bikes on it as well.
The river is very close and it was great for taking the dogs over there for an afternoon swim. They loved it!
The bugs from dusk to dark were very bad for the 2nd half of our time there. We couldn't sit outside in the evenings due to the mosquitos.
We had Verizon cell service, but no Wi-Fi is available.

Other reviewer was spot on. This park is several years young. So lots of time needed to have some shade trees. Rates are $24 W/E, $17 dry plus $7/day for the parks pass. As mentioned if you stay more than 10 nights in a Colorado state park then buy the annual pass.

We stayed here over the 2 weeks surrounding labor day 2015. It is a flat, open state park with little in the way of natural shelter within the camping areas. The entire park is pretty much just for camping, although there is a mile long walking/running path that follows the park's perimeter (This park does not provide access to any other trails/sidewalks- it sits along a busy 2 lane highway). As long as you are cool with being able to see many other rigs or tents, this place is just fine! Plenty of space allotted to each site with a fire ring, cement pad, and picnic table for each spot. Some spaces (those accommodating smaller rigs/tents) have a covered picnic table. The park is on the Yampa River, and a quick walk from your site to the rear of the park places you on the rocky shores of this meandering beast. If you walk towards the front of the park you could get hit by a semi-truck on the busy road out front. However, the highway noise really isn't bad and the park rangers more than make up for the lack of 'wilderness' here. They were friendly and always performing some sort of work on this park. One afternoon, it began to rain and we watched rangers go to several tent camper's sites and cover items that could get wet with garbage bags. The rest rooms are extremely clean. 2 washers and 2 dryers in impeccable working order. Decent location if wishing to visit Steamboat Springs. Just outside of the friendly town of Hayden, which boasts a great little grocery store (owner buys his meat from 4H kids!), micro-brewery (Yampa Valley Brewing Co has good beer, friendly owners, and NFL ticket!), and a post office. Sidenote: the bugs in the park can get pretty fierce if its not breezy; rangers reported spraying has been restricted. Bring bugspray! ALSO: CO parks require a daily use fee on top of your camping fee, so make sure to purchase a yearly pass ($70) if you plan to use CO parks for any length of time!
