The only down side is I had poor cell coverage with AT&T. So I couldn’t stay as long as I run on my business.
The closer you are to the road the more you can hear the traffic. I could hear traffic on site 5 but not on 7. I had to move off of seven because there was no shade.

Escaped the heat of Arizona by heading to this campground. The vet last spot is where we ended up staying (because all spots were full) but there was an abandoned camper that had been tagged by the forest service in the site we stayed in. I assume this drove others from this site. Both nights it was so busy we had people share the site with us after asking permission-and both nights someone camped across the road in a turn around spot that was not a campsite and a young man slept in the trees both night. Lots of pine trees and enjoyed a hike up to Kachina Wilderness to view Humphrey’s. Nice escape from the heat-but again it was a busy area.

We attempted to find a spot on a Friday evening but all the spots were taken. We got to the end of the campground and there was no place to turn around. After some very difficult maneuvering we finally got out but dented up our truck and rig. This spot is stunning and secluded, but without any guarantee of a spot you risk not having the ability to turn around. Down side is the campsites are so far apart you can’t see if they are taken before you get to them.

Decided to camp at Freidlein to be close to the trailhead for Humphrey’s Peak. Arrived around 5 pm (Tuesday 7/28) and started up the semi rough road. Our Campulance made it just fine and we even saw a set of Subaru’s navigating the road with good lines (it’s rougher toward the higher numbered sites). This area is National Forest, but they do ask you to camp in a numbered site. There are around 15 of them, but we found nearly half are closed from March until August to protect wildlife. We drove to the last site and were unable to find one, with it getting late and our planned super early departure, we found and flat pull off and parked there for the evening. They are doing some logging in the area, many stacked trees and machinery to remove them. But even with the work going on, the area is beautiful! it was cool and quiet and we’d consider returning once the logging is completed and it is outside of the protected wildlife season.
*it took us 20 minutes to drive out and another 10 minutes to Snowbowl.

Some recent logging in the area has taken place, but the sites are quite large and well shaded from the trees. A great view of the nearby Flagstaff suburb of Magdalena from site 5/6. We liked it for tent camping but the road was really rocky and if it is the same, we would not take the trailer on it. Have it checked out first. Otherwise it was great in the fall, the weather was great and the site was half a mile from the trails into Humphreys Peak area.

“Appears to be permanently closed”
noted 6/6/2023
I was hoping to camp here before climbing Humphrey’s Peak, but unfortunately, upon arrival I found the gate closed. After calling a ranger office, I found out camping is no longer allowed here during the summer.
