Unlike the previous reviewer. we had no problems with bugs, ATVs or gunfire. This is a beautiful spot with lots of hiking. There is beaver habitat restoration work going on in the creeks. As mentioned in another review, there is a large area just before the gate to drop a trailer and go explore for a site. We did that and found a very large site about half a mile down the road on top of a ridge with great views. Good road, though some vehicles with low clearance may scrape a little, four wheel drive is not required. There are a few sites farther down the road with some shade and there was a site next to us with shade, though at 10,000 feet in elevation it stayed nice and cool during our stay. Great for solar and Starlink plus both Verizon and T-Mobile service.

This is a beautiful area but it will never be a favorite of mine. First, it is somewhat buggy. Not the worst I've seen, but you will want screens from the ever present mosquitos and flies. There were a lot of beautiful butterflies also, fwiw. Second, there is little to no shade at the sites, which meant my rig would begin heating up at 9am and was unbearable by 1pm. Even though it is several degrees cooler than other nearby locations, it got very hot in the rig because of the broad sun and i was more comfortable at a slightly lower elevation with shade. Lastly, the locals do like to zip up and down the hilly forest road on a weekend night like a Rollercoaster and I've heard random gunfire at 3am. Tip- do not take your trailer down the forest road without scouting first as there is nowhere to turn around except through the campsites which may be occupied. One major pro is a strong verizon signal, i would stay here again in a pinch or if it is overcast

Crooked Creek is located just outside the city of Fairplay and sits within an aspen forest.
The main road to reach the National forest property is well maintained and does not require any high clearance. The entrance area is large enough to drop a trailer to scout the road ahead..
Once past the gate to access any site other than the first site one should have a high clearance trailer and vehicle due to large humps in the road. Sites are sunny and well spaced from each other and the first 4 are large enough for a group of rigs. The further back the more the road degrades and may require 4x4.
In autumn note that this is a popular hunting area. The area is closed from Jan 1 to June 15.
There are hiking trails within the area and it is also used for OHV riding.
