Big Dune Dispersed Camping

1st time there and was excited to check it out. Only 1-1/2 hour road trip to get there from Vegas. Easy to find and access road not to bad. Recommend slow travel in if you are hauling a rig. Plenty of flat spaces to set up camp and everyone we encountered was very friendly. Nice area to visit and close for those spur of the moment trips to get in a little dune time. Nothing compared to "Glamis" but still fun. Highly recommend. No water so make sure you bring what you need. It is the desert and gets cold at night so be prepared.

It’s a bit far out from Death Valley, and well, everything else. But we got in and out with a 40’ fifth wheel just fine. We stayed closer to the front because we pulled in at night and didn’t want to move further in. Generally pretty quiet but cars do go fast through here because the road is choppy.
We did pick up a bag of trash from our site so that was disappointing.

Verizon was decent, ATT was strong, but our data provider didn’t work with the local provider.

We stayed here for one night in early February. It was very easy to get to - about 5 miles off 95 on a well-maintained dirt road.

The site was beautiful - it surrounded by mountains, close to to the big sand dunes, and sunny but perfect for the winter. Because it’s the desert it gets cold at night so be prepared.

There’s no toilet or trash service but there are fire rings. We didn’t see another person while we here. Some fighter jets flew over very low around 5pm but no noise other than that. It was almost eerily silent.

It is a ways from gas, water, and groceries so come prepared.

We’ve tent camped all over the US and this is one of the sites we have liked best. We would come back.

great place to Camp right across from Area 51 dispersed camping throughout not sure how many sites but very visible easy access nice views ,no shade we came in March and weather was perfect and star gazing at night is amazing. closest town is 26 miles away and there is no grocery store or hardware store so come out here prepared if you plan on staying, easy access and good cell phone service "dry" camping at its finest! .....I only give the cleanliness a one-star review because well it's the desert everything's dirty!

Big Dune is a five square mile giant mound of sand located in the Amorgosa Valley. It's a great area for ATVs and dune buggies.

The entrance road to Big Dune (also known as Amorgosa Sand Dunes) is easy to find from US95. There is a road sign 1 mile ahead of the turn from either direction, and another sign just at the turn itself.

After turning onto the dirt entrance road it is 4 miles to the dunes. The entrance road is wide and graded, but the are several washboarded sections. There are a few places to pull off along the road if you don't want to make the entire trek. Any size rig can travel this road.

There are multiple large, flat areas to set up camp once you reach the dunes. 36.645951, -116.603114 are the coordinates of the largest campsite located nearest to the dunes. There are also sites at 36.647473 -116.611319, 36.644435, -116.608095, and 36.641454, -116.608609 which are quieter with minimal OHV traffic.

This is dry camping with no services, but if you travel several miles south on 95 to the intersection of 95 and 373 you'll find a gas station/convenience store, a rest area with fresh water, and a small campground if you need to dump or want hookups for a while.

AT&T coverage was 4-5 bars without a booster. Data and voice connectivity was rock-solid during the day but was less consistent after dark.

Note: There are other campsites on the opposite side of Big Dune just off Valley View Road on the south side of the dunes. There are three turn-offs there, some better than others. I suggest checking them out with a 4X4 vehicle before committing since some are in bad shape.
