Took our 13 ft camper on a rocky road around 2 miles to a site with a beautiful view of the foothills, an excellent fire ring and no one around. Saw and heard alot of coyotes and a few snakes.

Quiet and absolutely beautiful. Turn off to the road isn’t marked and the road is rough and rocky but we made it. So worth staying and enjoying the views and sunset.

Probably too rocky for tents but a stunning place to camp for the night. Sunset on the mountains is amazing and it’s v close to a trailhead.

It was quiet and our Subaru Impreza didn’t have too much trouble getting down the road. The location was great and we were able to get to Las Cruces in about 30 minutes and white sands in 45. It was clean and there was plenty of dry brush to use as kindling. The only tough part was that it’s sandy so our tent didn’t stay staked down when we got some very strong wind one night. I would recommend this site to anyone who is looking for a quiet primitive spot to soak up nature and relax.

We got in around 6pm after coming from white sands. We were in a Ford Explorer, which didn’t have too many problems going down the road however we heard some trailers struggling to make it through the rocks/ruts. You’re pretty close to a big road and can see the city lights of las cruces, but it was such a convenient stay I didn’t really mind. The sunset and mountains were beautiful!! You can hear the other campers if they’re not mindful of their noise, so probably isn’t the best place to go if you’re looking for serenity and solitude.
We stayed the night of Saturday 4/13/19, and didn’t have a hard time finding a spot. You could tell that a lot of people know about this campground, so it might be best to get there early if you’re going on a peak day, or have limitations on how rough of roads you can handle.

I think this is the best option for boondocking around the monument, other places are just big parking lots, but it’s probably best just for an overnight. The road is rough!! The road is rough!! We’re in a low clearance van and made it no problem, but had to go very very slowly. There are maybe 5 or 6 spots along the road w/ fire rings and then a wash that a few people went down that seems to have more spots - our van couldn’t go there. You are still within view of the main highway and any other campers that might be there.
The area isn’t very well maintained and it’s obviously a heavy-use area for locals. Lots of glass/trash and shotgun shells about.
We just got back from an afternoon hike and were about to settle in for another night when a group of about 7 guys pulled in down the road, set up camp and started firing shotguns. Wasn’t ideal or relaxing, so we moved on.
Our first night was lovely though a few people drove past us in the middle of the night. Still, it’s beautiful and perfect for a quick overnight, but wouldn’t plan on an extended stay.

The road is rocky and unkept, higher clearance would be a plus. This area is great for small rigs, vans, and tents. There are a couple sites for larger rigs, but the road may be difficult. We stayed in the first campsite on the right when you pull in and we have a 30ft camper. There is a washout in the road just passed the first campsite that we werent comfortable taking our rig over. We suggest parking and walking to scope out the road and your site. Stayed 3 nights with no issues. All sites have fire rings and are well defined. There is some road noise, more so during the weekend when people are off work and out hiking. It gets very quiet in the evenings. Great access to hiking trails on the Organ Mountains and to Las Cruces. Less than an hour to White Sands National Monument. Would stay again!

We tried to stay here but found the road to be too rough. This road loops off of the main Baylor Canyon Rd, and is nearly impassible at the northern junction due to some washing out of the gravel. The southern junction is more manageable and we saw some small campers and trucks camping back there. Ultimately, we went to the Sierra Vista Campground a couple miles away that was much more accessible for larger RV's.
There is also some camping available at the Baylor Canyon Pass Trailhead, about 3 miles north of this location. We saw a few people camped there when we did the hike.
