The road is washboard for awhile getting in and there are some ruts on the dispersed camping area.
If you have a smaller to medium size trailer or rig you can camp free easily, even when there is an event going on during the weekend.
There are some free dispersed sites near the pay loops with access to very clean pit toilets.

May 2021: The road in is a little rough but we made it with a 20’ TT. Only faint highway noise in the background. Excellent views. We would stay here again.

Very happy to have found this site, as we originally intended to drive into Colorado, but it got late. View was beautiful on both sides; flat field of trees to the west, colorful cliff to the east. The road to the site is a bit rocky, and I did manage to scrape one big rock, (sedan/wagon) but was able to avoid it on the way out. Trucks and Jeeps should have no trouble.
Little if any highway noise, and only one other vehicle passed our site the whole time

We went further back on the dirt road, taking a left at the fork. There is dispersed camping both directions. We saw a few mountain bikers and and there were a handful of other campers in the area. Road got rocky the further back we went but put 4-wheel drive F150 did fine as did our 25” Winnebago.

No services or water at this exit, but our 19' TT was an easy fit, and we saw larger TTs up the road as well. At Interstate 70 Exit 227, cut south under the freeway and west on the freeway's frontage road. Almost immediately after the westward turn, you will see a small industrial parking area. A level gravel road leads past that area to several well-dispersed primitive campsites suitable for tents or small RVs. RVs can take the first left-hand fork to find 5 or 6 level sites at the mesa rim.
If you go straight instead of taking the fork, smaller RVs will find several more sites with some turnaround room before the first rock outcroppings in the road. We would not venture past those outcroppings without a very small rig plus a large measure of expertise, though we saw an A-liner at the mesa rim.
