There are only two designated camp sites and there are signs saying only camp in designated camp sites. They were both taken, go figure. And you won’t know site 1 is taken until you drive down into it over big harsh rocky dips in the road that leads into the site, and then you have to back up in reverse over the the rocky dips once you see, oh yeah guess it is taken. And if you’re in campsite 1 be prepared for people coming into your site the entire time you’re there. This place must be designed to meet a quota or something rather than actually be thought out to be pleasant for people wanting to camp in the area. If you’re willing to drive all the way in just to find that the sites are taken and now you’re screwed..then it’d be fine. Otherwise, why bother. It’s a nice area, too bad it sucks to try to camp there.

Few miles to get to spots, you’ll pass a fishing pond and then there will be posted information along with camping spot locations. Spots are nicely marked. Plenty of downed firewood. Spots located close to river. Lots of privacy, nicely spaced out from one another. Railroad is active, we saw people crossing but a train did come at around 4:30am. Can be buggy at times. There are no restrooms or other facilities, this is a completely dispersed camping spot. Had good tree cover for our tent.

Beautiful campsites along the water at the end of a very well maintained and VERY narrow 4 mile road. The road in is a really beautiful drive however, very few turnouts so be prepared to back up at least a 1/4 to 1/2 mile if you meet someone coming the other way. There is a 5 TON Weight Limit for 2 axle vehicles at a bridge crossing. I did it in my 24ft class C but it was not a good idea. If you are traveling in anything bigger than a van I would skip this one. I did see some trucks with very small trailers down there. Bring your bug spray :)

Came across 2 empty sites. One across the train tracks by the horse paths. I eventually settled on one that was sort of hidden next to another campsite. It was nice and right next to the river however since it was set back from the road I had at least 10-15 cars attempt to drive into the site then turn around once they were far enough in to see us. One guy even pulled all the way into the site and turned around in the site which was extremely strange. I eventually hung a ratchet strap and bungee cord(all I had) across the front entrance to keep people from driving in and that kept another 7 or 8 cars from pulling in. So this spot is very very popular.
Overall it was a nice site and easy river access. Would stay here again. Docked one star for the amount of times I had other people trying to get into the site

Nice site right on the bank of the French Broad River. No picnic table or facilities. But, there was a fire ring. Had to pick up some trash left from previous campers. There were 2 trailheads close by and a small fishing lake. Fairly easy access to the sites. Sites are spaced a good distance apart.

It’s in between mile markers 21-22 near the boat ramp a few miles outside of Hot Springs. The free campsites are about 5 miles off the road the roadway will be gravel. The further you go the better the views.
A few hiking spots close to the camping section.
One other group stayed their that night (3/31) Camping areas are designated and have plenty of privacy. No restrooms or running water.
