Wateree Recreation Area

I have stayed at many Air Force campgrounds and this is the only one I would not recommend. Multiple problems with the water hookups. When I arrived, another site was hooked up to my faucet. There were a lot of long-term campers, who stay the maximum 6 months, leave for a night and return for another 6 months. One long-term resident was living in a cobbled-together tent. It was pretty awful.

The washrooms and laundry were marginal. The grounds were littered with old vehicles, machine parts and other large debris.

On a positive note, there is convenient access to the lake and the residents weren't loud.

The Wateree length-of-stay policy is that campers can remain for six months and then must leave for a brief period before returning for six more months. Many campers have been here for multiple six-month periods, which gives the campground a kind of trailer park feel. Long-term campers have gear and supplies piled outside their RVs.

There are serious issues with broken water hookups. When I arrived, a nearby camper was hooked up to my water. His had been out of service for several days.

Furthermore, many of the grills are rusted through and fire pits are full of ash and half-burned logs.
