As someone who drastically prefers free, out there in that woods and far away from any one or thing else camping, this place was not that, but lovely all the same.

Our spot was nestled in the oaks and their seemingly infinite hardwood fellows, perched above the lake with an east trail descending downward to what was almost a perfect beach (the remnants of Mountain Dew cans, broken water pistols and an old buoy the differentiating factor.)

Massive hornets had taken over the bathrooms in our loop, but hot showers were to be had in the first section. A playground, and the fact that only one other set of campers were there left the experience all sunshine and glorious.

We also discovered the Osage orange here, which proved to be the big green cherry on top.

A decent camp above the lake. Water spigots not far from the camp sites. Paved parking with fire rings and grills and concrete tables. Bring a rake for leaves and spiders. Vault toilets with plenty of debris and spiders to keep you company. Frank, the camp horse fly, likes to buzz your head then zoom off laughing. Short drive down to the boat ramp and fishing dock. We arrived Labor Day Saturday and the camp was almost empty. I’m guessing because it was hot as BALLS and very wooded with way more bugs than should be allowed in polite society
