“Hillbilly Heaven - The Eastern Shore experience we were hoping for”

Taylor's Island Family Campground is essentially two different campgrounds. The majority of the CG is for seasonal campers with long-term leases. This is the section you drive by on the way to the office and, indeed, is pretty sketchy, if you've never been to an old RV park near the water. There are a lot of old campers with some sort of add-on (rooms, screen porches etc) and boats scattered everywhere. A Google reviewer described it as a "rundown gypsy camp."

The "other" campground is the small area right on Chesapeake Bay where they put RV's who are visiting. There are perhaps 10-12 transitory sites, with a few being long enough for a big rig. There are also two rental campers in this area. The price of $19/day reflects the weekly rate of $115 plus $3/day for electricity for a total of $136 for the week. The CG takes reservations. I didn't do a Speedtest but Verizon was fast, just bogging down a bit over the holiday weekend.

We arrived on the Friday of July 4th weekend to a full campground. There was the normal holiday craziness but everyone was friendly. Everyone was well behaved. By 8:00 am on Monday, ALL the transitory campers had pulled out and we had the place to ourselves.

From Monday morning until we left at noon on Friday, we were in heaven - Hillbilly Heaven, as proclaimed by a resident. Yes, the CG is old and shows it but the electric pedestals were new and the bath house was clean. The small store is well stocked. The seawall is made up of old sections of concrete from somewhere but it works. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. In every way, this CG is a throw back to earlier times.

We enjoyed a ~10 mile bike ride to the dead end of Punch Island Rd (with virtually no traffic) which took us through scenic forests, fields, and houses along the Bay. We saw Great White Egrets, Great Herons, osprey and numerous other birds. Harriet Tubman National Historic Site and the Black Water National Wildlife Refuge are nearby. We took the small Oxford-Belleview Ferry (9 cars) to Belleview and then explored St. Michael's and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. Cambridge is about a half hour away with a Walmart and other services. Lindy's Seafood is right down the road with fabulous fresh seafood. We watched several pairs of Bald Eagles fish in the Bay everyday.

If we didn't have places to go and people to see, we would have stayed another week. It was relaxing and beautiful. We sat outside every evening to watch the sunset on Chesapeake Bay.

They were very nice on the phone. We drove in and drove back out. Mostly all full timers and very sketchy. I wish I took photos to share.
