No clue what the money goes towards (there are no amenities) but I’m glad my Canada day was ruined over such a caring worker of the park. Definitely a cool place I’ve gone to my entire life, but I won’t be returning.
Maybe the workers should be ensuring the sites are properly labeled instead of writing tickets to unassuming campers. None of the sites that are “permit only” match the board at the entrance and there was no signage.

Really nice campground. Quiet and out of the way. Boat launch and small beach. Unfortunately the non-seasonal spots are no longer free as of May 2019. They have a number you are supposed to call and make payment.

Free campgrounds are rare in Ontario so when I heard there was a rustic provincial park campground offering free camping north of Thunder Bay, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed! The park has a day-use area with a large sandy beach on the shores of Dog Lake and even a boat launch. The campground features 3 loops with a total of 63 campsites. The park offers “seasonal camping” which means people can pay to have a site for the entire summer season, leaving their camper on the site the entire season and spending as much time there as they like. Many of the sites are occupied however there are a dozen or so sites still available for transient camping for up to 23 nights for free!
The park has no water supply, no electric sites and no dump station. However, there are various pit toilets located throughout the park. We visited in late September on a Friday overnight to Saturday. There were no rangers in the park the entire time we were there however a friendly camper said that rangers did come by regularly in the summertime. Some campers did party with loud music until around midnight but quieted down after that.
The park is located about 25 km north of Highway 102. The pavement gives way to gravel after about 6 km. The gravel road is wide with loose gravel but there were no potholes or washerboard. On the way out we passed a vehicle that was maintaining the gravel surface which would explain why the road was so good. Once you get into the provincial park itself, there are a bunch of potholes on the road. I was mostly able to navigate around them so it wasn’t a big issue. About 10 km north of 102, there are a few roadside camping spots right along the river where there are some rapids. These spots are quite small but a smaller camper might be able to fit.
Silver Falls themselves are not located in the camping area: you have to drive past the Ontario Power Generation sign and down a road that warns of a gate ahead. Just before the gate is a small parking area. I drove in towing my small trailer and was able to back into the one remaining spot to turn around: I wouldn’t recommend driving down this road towing anything. The trailhead to Silver Falls is marked with a sign across from the parking area. The trail quickly reaches a dirt road and there is no sign. Turn right and walk down the road, looking for the trail to pick up again on your right. The trail is marked with blue blazes.
