“Solid boondocking in NF, near facilities @ Boykin Springs Rec. Area, and 100 yr old sawmill ruins. ”

Take Forest Service Road 313 from Hwy 63, then turn on FS RD 326 to the left just 1 mile before Boykin Springs Rec. Area. FS RD 326 is a smooth one-lane dirt and gravel road. Sexton Pond will be 1 mile on the left with dispersed camping on both sides of the pond. There is a Jeep road around the pond with other sites on the east side. There were 5 campers when I camped (horse trailer with large camp, 2 travel trailers, 2 different truck/tent campers). Two camps ran quiet generators most of the night. Room for 8-12 in the main two sections around the pond. The South side of the pond is higher and less rutted, but less accessible to larger rigs. The North side has some ruts and puddles after a rain with large open areas. The site is also used as a hunters' camp during deer season. I arrived on Friday just after 5 pm and was the 3rd camper. Secured one of the best sites close to the pond with a fire pit and no trouble driving through a small puddle in a van (Ram ProMaster). Zero bars on AT&T, but 1 bar along raised sections of 326. Flushed a bald eagle while walking around the pond that evening. Following morning rode mountain bike to Boykin Springs RA (2 miles), but the water was being worked on so couldn't use the restroom/shower facilities (free day-use @ Boykin Springs). After lunch rode mountain bike the 2.4 miles south on 326 to the trailhead leading to the Old Aldridge Sawmill ruins. The short spur trail ties in with the Sawmill Trail (stay left) and in .3 miles you arrive at the ruins (3 large structures w/ plenty of graffiti). An interesting part of East Texas history. For more history of the area visit the Texas Forestry Museum in Lufkin (https://www.treetexas.com).
