Beautiful Spot With Views Of Mount Shasta. If Heading Here, Use Lower Sand Flat Road To Enter. Upper Sand Slat Road Is Rutted And Full Of Gullies. Plenty Of Sites From Full Sun To Tucked Away In The Trees. Towing a 16 ft trailer with no issue, larger rigs up to 30 ft should be ok

A brutal place to camp. Tourists drive up the road at high speed—the road goes to nowhere really. Also locals are no joy either as they bomb through the woods on dirt bikes and jeeps. This is a very popular road to just cruise, despite its poor and very rocky condition.

Would recommend a high clearance vehicle to access the more isolated spots in the area-there are spots with views of Mt Shasta and the surrounding valley!

Absolutely beautiful spot. Felt I had the mountain all to myself. It was slow getting my Airstream 22FB up here, but I am so happy I did. Easily my favorite spot so far.

Lower Sand Flat road not as bad as expected. Passed easily (albeit slowly) without need for clearance or 4WD.

The road to get in is a bit rough so you’ll need high clearance. My Tacoma had no problem but I’d be afraid to take a sedan back there. Lots of ruts and large rocks in the road. When you reach the area, there are lots of little spots to choose from. You can either camp along the dirt road north of the loop in an open area or, I would suggest, take one of the side dirt roads to the west into the woods for a few thousand feet. It’s a little hillier and shady but there are lots of little cozy camp spots scattered around. There were about 10 people camping around when I was there but there was a ton of space between spots. You still have a decent sense of privacy.

Sand flat is located on a forest road loop. We entered the upper loop road, but about 100 yards in, the road got very rough. We stopped at that point where there was a turn around and room for 3-4 large rigs close together. If you have a large rig, I'd recommend walking in to check this spot first because you'll have a hard time turning around if it is occupied. The spot was very shaded, so do not count on solar. It was very pretty being surrounded by all of the tall trees, though. You can't see the peak through the trees, but a short walk up to the road had beautiful views of the mountain and the valley, though.
Cell signal was good at this spot for both AT&T and Verizon.
If you follow the road further in, you did finally reach an open area where you could get solar. It would be very, very slow going with a larger rig, though. I wouldn't recommend it unless you were planning on staying put for a while. The lower loop road wasn't quite as rough, but it was a bit narrower. In both cases, I definitely recommend scouting the route before trying to drive anything larger than a van/truck in.
