Park is closed from Memorial Day to 1 October because of excessive summer heat. Yet lots of people still camp overnight along Highway 159 leading into Park on Nevada Department of Transportation property at no cost. We stayed her on Easter Sunday, figured most folks would be headed out so timed our arrival for about an hour after check out. Drove up to a home made Campground Full sign. We stayed her on Easter Sunday, figured most folks would be headed out so timed our arrival for about an hour after check out. Drove up to a home made Campground Full sign. The camping veteran I am, I disregarded the sign and found 6 empty sites.
When the Host (which there were three) finally came out to check tags at 4:30pm, I asked him why the FULL sign? He told me that he was out earlier at 7 am and again at 9am, which I reminded him were not check out times so that didn't solve anything. He then said that the campground was full now....so I told him that like a broken watch is right twice a day, if he just left the campground full sign out it would be right once a day.
He just didn't get it. If you can't monitor the campground during check out time, then just take the sign down, its a first come first serve campground for gosh sake.
This campground, like Joshua Tree in California is now overrun with climbers. They patrolled the campground mid morning looking at tags then ask if they can park near your site or slip their tag under yours.
They also have a HUGE almost two story trash bin that was completely full. On a holiday weekend that should have been emptied prior to folks leaving.

We found plenty to do from this nice BLM campground just down the road from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. While this campground will appeal mostly to those who are tent camping or traveling in smaller rigs, we did see several 30-ish foot rigs that had found suitable spots. We found plenty to do from this nice BLM campground just down the road from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. While this campground will appeal mostly to those who are tent camping or traveling in smaller rigs, we did see several 30-ish foot rigs that had found suitable spots. There are no hook-ups here and no dump station so come in with full fresh water tanks and empty holding tanks. The campground does have water spigots scattered throughout but you are not allowed to fill RV tanks from them. There are vault toilets - which are very well maintained and clean I might add. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring and some have a covered ramada too. Although the campground was fairly busy when we were there it was very quiet and peaceful at night.
The road into the campground is well graded gravel but is not well marked from the highway. Watch for the sign that says "BLM Fire Station" and take it. The sign for the campground itself is located after you turn off the highway.
Red Rock Canyon NCA offers many wonderful hikes and stunning scenery. We also enjoyed visiting the little community of Blue Diamond and Mountain Springs Ranch State Park.
W e would definitely stay here again!

As stated by another reviewer, this campground is mainly about location, location, and location. It's a short drive from Las Vegas and mere minutes from the entrance to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. The park itself is wonderful and definitely worth a visit.
Red Rock Canyon Campground is quiet, with both toilets and running water. While there's a general view of the surrounding desert and it's nice, it doesn't provide a view of Red Rock Canyon NCA unless you climb the hill.
As a tent camper, I found the tent pad on my campsite to be mostly deep sand. The combination of a lack of anchor-worthy rocks and a very gusty wind made it nearly impossible to set up my tent properly. I finally gave up and just slept in the truck.
Small RV's are well-suited to the campground, but larger RV's were only able to park near the entrance. This location lacked the spaciousness of the regular campsites.
Would I stay here again? Only for the location, not for the campsite itself.

Our intention was to nab one of the 5 designated RV campsites... of which 3 were available but none were appealing. The sites are basically around a lonely gravel cul-de-sac, an unlevel one at that. So we drove through the main campgrounds and found several sites big enough for our 28ft Airstream and our TV. We were much happier there.... more
Our intention was to nab one of the 5 designated RV campsites... of which 3 were available but none were appealing. The sites are basically around a lonely gravel cul-de-sac, an unlevel one at that. So we drove through the main campgrounds and found several sites big enough for our 28ft Airstream and our TV. We were much happier there.
The sites are spacious and clean, no hookups. Most sites are used by tent campers whom are accessing the endless rock climbing routes in the area. It is busy for that reason- the climbers are up fairly early and head out for climbing, then return later in the day.
The scenery is surprising- gorgeous mountains and high desert landscape only 10 miles from the Vegas Strip. You can sin all you want- word is what happens in Vegas stays there. So I say go for it.
You can hike from the campgrounds or access excellent mountain biking 12 miles down the road in quaint Blue Diamond, NV. Red Rock Canyon has a scenic drive which looked amazing, but we didn't drive it. Road cycling is another popular activity. We would have stayed longer but had a schedule to keep.

Overall Rating
Red Rock Campground is more for tent campers than it is RVers. There is an RV section that is just a big turn around with markers for spot numbers. There aren't any amenities here, so it's really just about location.
No cell service. (Verizon or AT&T)
