A few hundred yards later is a BLM signpost that says "Closed". It's for wildlife protection and recovery time for the land. There's a little spot where I was able to turn around in my van. If you're in anything much bigger, or pulling any trailer, you'll have to back up to the staging area. I left three stars because it will be nice once it opens up again. Call the BLM local field office for latest info, I've always received fast, accurate and friendly information from them.

We were making our first trip to this campground area, and in selecting a site, we wanted to go for views, vs finding something that may have been a better overall site. Which leads to, what was our favorite thing was about this location: Depending on the site you choose, you have the ability to have 360-degree views of more mountain peaks and ranges than I believe I've ever seen in one spot. It truly was spectacular.
In the future, we will probably work to find a site that has a little better shade and points of interest, as the site we picked was basically wide open with no trees, and nothing too much in the way to explore. There was a little trail off our site, but it wasn't anything more than an old cow trail.
We were driving our Honda Ridgeline Trailsport (with some added skidplates), pulling a Space Trailer and Roofnest, and we had no problems with the trails in and around the Poncha Loop area. There was some fairly deep drainage ruts in some areas, so you have to stay awake and pick your line wisely, but overall it was fairly easy access. There is one large drop right as you enter your first cattle fence grate, that may make your trailer bottom out, but other than that, its fairly basic forest road conditions.

If you don't cluster near the entrance, the sites are very large and private. We camped at 38.4015 -106.0959 and our site was huge and provided good Starlink coverage. Cel coverage was pretty good in one position in the RV, otherwise it was non existent. Great views across the valley to the Sangre de Cristo mountains. The roads are great, no problems with any rigs. We had no problems with any OHVs and the Rainbow Trail is a short 2 mile drive away. You can get dump for $10 at the Poncha Springs Visitor Center and fill water for free. There are two holes and easy in and easy out. While you are in the area, be sure to get a sandwich at the Poncha Pub. It is the best sandwich place ever and we stop everytime we are in the area.
This location is what dispersed camping is all about.

There are a lot of RVs but they're well spaced out. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon.

This is a great place, if you plan on bringing a jeep, trails run all the way to Bonanza had a blast, returned to camp and chilled, nice and quiet.
My 3 series isata dynaride had no problems getting past the second cattle gap snugged into the trees.

It's either gravel, cow dung, or terrain that you can't do anything with. I was beyond bored. There were a few bad storms that came through and the wind was horrible. Sunsets...meh. It was cloudy most of the time and we had forest fires too. It's very dusty. You'll come home with a layer of it covering everything.

About 40 miles north of Saguache, CO. I pulled into the parking lot a few hundred feet off US285. It was higher than highway and back far enough to muffle most of the road noise. This place was easy to find off the highway but a little difficult to get to. It was raining when we got there and the dirt road was extremely muddy. Our site was very unlevel but it had beautiful views. There were other people but we couldn’t see anyone and made us feel all alone. We loved it!
