“Beautiful striated canyons, avoid weekends”

We took our Airstream up some rough, uneven dirt roads to get here, and were rewarded with shallow fault canyons in gorgeous shades of red and yellow. We parked on a flat(ish) plateau overlooking the canyons and promptly realized that the cellular signal was unusable. Husband climbed up a steep hill and jerry-rigged an antenna on top of a piece of sheet metal. We were able to generate a usable, if mediocre 3G signal as a result.

It's not the ideal place to work or to take a shiny, new rig that doesn't off-road well. But if you can MacGyver out a cell signal and don't mind a little off-roading to get here, this place is fascinating. We rode our mountain bikes around the canyons and went for a hike in the high rocky hills nearby.

Once the weekend hits, half of San Diego comes here and unloads motorbikes, ATVs and 24-packs of Rolling Rock. Totally different scene. I wouldn't come on a weekend or during a busy workweek, but would gladly return otherwise.
