The bad: little oversight of rules, like keeping dogs on leashes, lots of sketchy people wandering off the beach, in fact this seems to be a place where non- campers walk around. There have been thefts, mostly of bikes and generators, according to the hosts. And when we arrived at 4 pm, there was no one at the ranger station. And road noise from 101 was loud from 4-7.
Overall, people are really friendly here. We had more conversations with people in one day than we had in 2 weeks at Arizona campgrounds.

There’s trash bins and water here and there but dumping cost $10 wether you are camping here or not…it use to be free for people camping here and you use to be able to pay at the kiosk so it was only $25. But it is nice with lawn and just a walk away to the beach but they need to come clean and just say it’s $32.99 for your site…California…”come on man”🤣

We stayed here and car camped for one night. The staff person was extremely friendly and helpful. The sites are not private but they’re spacious and the showers and bathrooms are clean and easy to access. The campground is within walking distance of town, the beach and the monarch butterfly grove. This was a very pleasant place to stay. We paid the senior rate, which is half the regular rate of $25.00. No hookups here but there’s water. Definitely a great place to stay at the beach!

There is a dump station and potable fill spigot that is a safe distance from the dump site. The dump station is $10 which is unfortunate but worth it. Site 28 is a pull through on the inside but near the south-west corner of the park and has easy access to the beach. The campground was packed but amazingly quiet. We stayed Tuesday through Saturday and maybe this was more of a midweek crowd versus weekend but the other campers were very quiet and respectful.
The biggest drawback wasn't the campground but the weather. It's common in June to see what I heard referred to "June Gloom" where it's foggy at Pismo. The beach is gorgeous but the fog and temperature made it chilly to go to the beach. My wife found Avila Beach just north with sunny skies and less wind. It was an easy solution to poor planning on my part!

Most of the campsites have little to no shade unfortunately. Each campsite has a fire ring though and each campsite has plenty of space between each site. While it’s not private or secluded, it’s spacious!

So is the short little trail to the Monarch Butterfly Grove.
After camping for 3 days at an overcrowded spot near Claremont, CA, this was a delight! I imagine it might get warm there in the heat of summer so you might want to find a spot with a tree/shade, but in Mid-October we wanted all the warmth we could get.
There are HUGE fire pits to make awesome campfires in. And the price was so cheap!
Even though there is no wifi here, we would definitely come back here again!

This is the third or fourth time staying at this State campground. I really like the open spaces and easy access to Pismo Beach and adjacent communities. There is a decent amount of space between the campsites.
It was hot during the stay but cooled down nicely at night. Many of spots do not have a lot of shade.

The sites are not too close together for a beach campground and it is right next to a free monarch butterfly sanctuary. There is a dump and potable water. There are clean bathrooms and showers. Note: due to the California water situation, the showers are not free.
The staff was accommodating and allowed me to move to another spot that opened although I had reserved the one I was in for all three nights.
It is about 15 minute walk to the pier and to the little town of Pismo Beach, which is adorable.
The biggest negative is that there are many trails over the dunes to the water which go between the best sites (along the dunes). Some people do not the good sense to use trails that are not near an occupied campsite. I had some actually staring into my RV while I was working at my computer! It seems this situation could be easily corrected by the campground putting cones, or something similar to block these trails. There are plenty of trails at either end of the campgrounds.
