The road in is slightly hair being sandy and a bit bumpy but have no fear...it's not that bad. Off of 375, the crater campsite is roughly 6 miles from the turnoff. Amazing views and DEAD quiet. Solid cell coverage.

The road in is washboarded and a little sandy. 4 wheel drive is a wise choice. There are only a few spots to camp with a trailer along the road. The crater and surrounding scenery are spectacular. You can hike into the crater. More craters dot the high desert landscape. A seasonal lake fills one crater. There are several dirt roads to explore and one leads to the lake. The elevation is high, 6000 feet or so, so nights are cool. In April I woke up to 2 inches of snow one morning. Be sure to bring extra gasoline if you plan on driving around. There are no gas stations between Tonapah and Ely.
The hiking is easy as this is all high and open desert.
Only saw one other person during my stay. I will be back.

To get to the Lunar Crater you will turn off of Highway 6 and take a 7 mile long dirt road. When I went in October of 2020 it was wasboarded pretty bad. But accessible in 2wd. Complete solitude and absolutely beautiful. At night you could see every star in the sky!

Great off the beaten path Boon Docking sight. It was an easy right up to the road. The road to the crater was bumpy and half way through the gravel road it turned to sand. Great off the beaten path Boon Docking sight. It was an easy right up to the road. The road to the crater was bumpy and half way through the gravel road it turned to sand. If it was wet we would have gotten stuck so don't go during wet months or days. We stayed at the rim of the crater and woke up to the most beautiful sunrise. The drive was worth it. Took an hour to go 6 miles, but totally worth it!
